However one important factor, we dont know the acquisition costs so we cant tell if its unrealised gain or sitting on a loss loss.

There are 2 questions I would ask. Firstly how many of those investments have they pumped hundreds of millions into on an annual basis?
Secondly, to what extent will the belt tightening around oil going to have an impact? I suspect one of the easiest and first things they can do at moments where there is a liquidity crunch is to start cashing out investments. I have a very small portfolio, but I know if I lost my job it would probably have to be one of the first things I sold.
This oil crisis is not going away. Long term trends are against oil (in terms of green energy). You also feel medium terms trends (away from globalisation airlines going bust, people working from home etc) will also be added to a short term crisis. I haven't checked oil for a while but suspect it's still well below 40$. It costs us 38$ to get it out of the ground. I know for the Nordic countries they can do it as cheaply as 15$ so I don't know where the Saudi's pitch in relation to those. But even if it were in the middle somewhere, they may have seen a profit margin of say $100+ per barrel reduce now to $10. Even in recent times it may be down from £40 to 10$. For a major part of the economy, that provides the liquidity to turn all other aspects this is a severe reduction.
The idea they will then be throwing money about, ah la City when the profit rate was $10x that rate just doesn't sit right with me at all. And that is me being quite optimistic, the last batch of oil (which they produced lots of) they probably lost $60+ dollars per barrel. It may take them close to a year to get back to an even point of just recovering that single months loss. (Obviously if we get another repeat this month, double the time frames). I'm not sure they can approach investments in quite the same way.
