In the 90s there was a microeconomy in footballers wages whereby the three clubs up there were paying between 10 and 15% more on wages just to persuade players to move there because it was so crap. Boro paid Paul Merson's brother a wage to keep him company.

There are baked-in reasons why Newcastle are a mediocrity, always have been and always will be.
 

The more competition the better. The prem is a joke with a few teams just smashing the lesser teams week in week out. City or Liverpool turn up at St James’ and it’s a shock if they don’t win convincingly. That’s not the way this league should be. If Newcastle can get themselves in and around the top 6 and we can also, and Leicester are in there then it means that three of sky’s precious super six are not in there and seeing any of that lot suffer hard times would be worth it.

I'd usually partially agree with this statement, but the only competition that I want Newcastle challenging in is the Under 7s South Shields Tiddlywinks League.

I'd want them to lose that as well to be fair... badly!
 

Will get to the point where the Prem eats itself from within.

Imagine a top 10 of clubs all with more money than sense - 6 clubs losing out every year on CL money I can see the european super league or some form of UEFA meddling to keep the big clubs like Utd safe.

Don't worry. That's when the Euro Super League will come into play which wont be all about the finances the club's got, will be the worldwide brand appeal.

So that removes your Leicester's etc
