How're Qatar even in that conversation anyway... The regional power struggle there is between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
0 marks for geo-political awareness Steve.
Yes I mean Qatar and Saudi are broadly on the same side in the geo-political struggle. So I suppose it's about as truthful as the idea Newcastle are being bought out by the main body of Saudi who intend to pump money in.
Actually Qatar are under strong influence of Iran, hence the current dispute. (No trade or direct travel from UAE/Saudi/Bahrain to Qatar. This all started close to 3 years ago now, and no end in sight. (Arabs generally don't fix things, they will eventually forget and drift together again)
When it started, all Qatari owned business in UAE shut overnight, and nationals forced to leave in 48 hrs. Imagine the hardest possible brexit x 100.
Saudi is desperate to get a slice of the tourist pie, that's why they are (honestly) a lot more welcoming than 5 years ago. Religious police disbanded, women allowed to drive, tourist visas available, resorts springing up. They have a leg of the European Tour there, they have the Formula E GP, they have boxing. I reckon within a few years the resorts will allow alcohol.
Edit: it's still dodgy as hell, you can't have state sponsored death squads cutting up journalists.
Edit 2: not forgetting Qatar holds the broadcast rights for all the major leagues, They are the only official broadcaster for Middle East, North Africa. Saudi has a pirate station with a pile of evidence that it's state funded, stealing the Qatari BeIN sports feed and broadcasting free to air.
So yeah, it has quite a lot to do with Qatar.
