….the definition of ‘playing like the game matters’. All the money, all the medals, nothing to prove & he still does that towards the end of his playing days. Incredible footballer.
My mate who’s been a United season ticket holder for 40 years says he sacrificed himself for the team and Ronaldo in the early years and was more important to the team and when the team lost Teves and Ronaldo he carried the team on his own to the detriment of his own longevity hence why he couldnt stay at the top as long. He says his contribution as a footballer was unbelievable and not recognized enough.I watched the “ Rooney” documentary on Prime yesterday, along with Mrs blueloon who was interested. Undoubtedly the best bits for me were the early Everton years . I remember the “ Once a blue always a blue” goal and that FA Youth Cup final , he was a one MAN team back then. Those early years with us and some of the goals he scored will always stay with me. Still the best 16/17/18 year old I’ve seen .
That is something that has come up in the past, how United used Rooney to the benefit of the team as opposed to him individually, hence he was never regarded alongside Messi/ Ronaldo in terms of individual greatness. Great interview with a brilliant player. Everyone thought he was finished, 37 when he joined. What a player. Everything you want in a centre half >
When he was out injured he was still in the gym everyday doing what he could, apparently one repping more than any of the roid heads even at a footballers weight. Complete specimen and a brilliant defender and leader.I had a photo with Gough and Mendieta on a beach in Barbados 10 years ago. Gough still looked as fit as a fiddle, told them I was an Evertonian and Goughs words to Mendieta..... " ahh.... now thats a proper football club"
