News of Ex Players

Full credit to him. One of the very few who bucked the usual trend of leaving Everton...and going down from there. The signs were good from the start, though. Here was a young man who was prepared to move to Germany and Italy to make a name for himself. His wider horizons deserve their reward.

Stones has - but did he ever quite live up to the hype? He was too good for us, but was never quite the world star some were heralding him as. The rest? I wouldn't be so sure. Let's see where Gordon is in a few years.

Rooney is the obvious one, of course. Lookman has done marvelously. While some moved on to better pastures (Lescott, Arteta), I'm not sure they ever really performed at hugely improved standards at their new clubs. They simply took their competence to better surroundings. But Lookman has unquestionably developed. Perhaps that was inevitable? I don't think so. He had been to Leipzig from a young age and showed maturity in taking on that culture change. So, he deserves great credit.

Richarlison is another for the long list of "largely saw his best days at Everton" even though he was touted as a superstar.

Of course, I'm not blaming ANY of those players for moving on. Everton was run like a corner shop for three decades. It was no place for genuine talent. It's just that some weren't quite as talented as they liked us to believe...

Most successful English centre back of his generation, 6 premier League titles, one champions League, 83 England caps (more than Terry or Ferdinand). Has been named in the premier League team of the season twice, champions League team of the season and world FIFA 11. Played a key role in City's treble winning season by regularly stepping into defensive midfield!

Nah didn't live up to the hype

In European and world terms?

Nope, he didn't - but that's more a commentary on the hype rather than Stones, who is obviously a very good player and highly successful. He's not, however, exactly Franz Beckenbauer or Franco Baresi. And he was badly exposed in the World Cup quarter-final with France, but then he has never been a great defender.

He's had a fine career, but I wouldn't consider him a world-beater (which was what some had him down as, and obviously some still do).

Played in a World Cup semi final and 2 European championship finals aswell. He’s done alright for himself for a £2.5m signing from Barnsley.

Less than that wasn't he? £1.5-2m I thought. Has definitely out preformed that price, but I do agree somewhat that he has underachieved in terms of ability/performance compared many peoples predictions. Has certainly been very successful, but not turned into the Beckenbauer/Ferdinand some said he would.

I think he has personally, World XIs and CL XIs on top of his medals is pretty much reaching the very top as far as I can see. I think doing any more than he has and you're into the realms of genuine all time great which is a lot to be expecting. It's obviously just opinion with these things though, personally I thought Ferdinand was always overrated (in a relative sense, he was clearly very good) but it's totally subjective. Stones developed a reputation very early on that sort of stuck with him so he makes a defensive mistake every couple of years and gets the 'well he has got that in him' treatment in a way that other players who make more mistakes don't. A bit like Pickford in that sense.

In City's CL winning season he was brilliant. Including in the final.

Not sure where to post this (suggestions welcome) - The fab documentary 'Howard's Way' is currently available on Amazon Prime for subscribers.

Perhaps I don't watch him enough anymore, but he's never struck me as reaching the same levels as Ferdinand. Maybe it's a perception thing, and he's overshadowed by all City's attacking players etc, but everyone "knew" how good Ferdinand and Vidic were. I just don't get that with Stones and anyone. City are always about the Kompanys, Fernandinhos, Rodris, De Bruynes, Haalands etc for me.
