….ha, ha. I think I suggested Beto wasn’t a particular upgrade on Simms and I hopefully added neither is good enough (see below). Not sure that can be interpreted as ‘crying about selling Simms’ because I don’t think he’s anywhere near good enough.

What I was highlighting is how spending £25m on Beto is symptomatic of our dreadful transfer business

…I think that’s ok business, especially with the insurance of a sell-on clause. The point I’d make is I don’t think he’s much worst than Beto.

Nope, he didn't - but that's more a commentary on the hype rather than Stones, who is obviously a very good player and highly successful. He's not, however, exactly Franz Beckenbauer or Franco Baresi. And he was badly exposed in the World Cup quarter-final with France, but then he has never been a great defender.

He's had a fine career, but I wouldn't consider him a world-beater (which was what some had him down as, and obviously some still do).
