Unsworth conjured up better football after two training sessions with some u-21 kids in the team than Martinez did at any point in three seasons.

I enjoyed both the games against Wolfsburg, but I know what you mean. I wonder if Rhino is qualified enough, but he certainly wouldn't be stubborn and closed minded as Martinez. I am happy for us to appoint rhino if we miss some of our big targets.

I'm a bit afraid to put this out there, but am I the only one who would take LVG if United let him go?

He has his older age working against him, but I really don't think he'd be a bad addition to the list. I think a lot of the fuss is from United supporters still thinking they have a title winning team.

Ferguson left the squad a mess and Moyes did little to rebuild it. LVG seems to be doing a great job building an up and coming team. I just think too many United supporters have this complex that they deserve to be fighting for the title every single season. In my opinion, considering how young their squad is, they finished right about where I'd expect them to be able to finish.

I think he'd be a good manager, and one who supports youth development on top of it all.

I wasn't so much calling for Rhino as manager (would be great if we could mentor him though for the role in the future), more just arguing against what I see as a myth that Martinez played wondrous attacking football. I don't think it was. When we were on the ball we played very cautious sideways ball retention and didn't do it very well. Our best play was when we hit teams on the break, even at home. Against good sides this ceding of possession ultimately hurt us. Unsworth showed in one game that he could better this by just letting a few players off the leash and keeping a tight back 4. Hopefully a top manager will really leverage the talent in the squad and the good football (backed by tangible results not subjective aesthetics) will follow.

And it seems there aren't very many to choose from - off the top of my head I can think of just Koeman and Mourinho, both of which seem unlikely.

Mourinho Koeman Pellegrini Hiddink AVB Benitez. We might not like all of them, but they're successful managers who all have prem experience.

Koeman wasn't proven before Saints.

Neither was Poccetino. Or Loads of others.
I just feel that we can't take a risk at present on a manager who is not proven in the Premier League and by that I don't mean somebody like Tony Pulis.

We really have to make next season count to get us back up to where we should be.

Mourinho - Seems unlikely

Koeman - Only one I can possibly see happening

Pellegrini - Off to Zenit or Valencia by the looks of it.

Hiddink - Retiring

AVB - Not exactly "Premier League proven" if he has done woefully with both clubs he's managed here.

Benitez - No.

Or not...

I'm not too arsed on prem experience myself but can understand.

For me we just need a winner. Someone who has won. As a player or manager. Preferably both.

I don't see Koeman happening. Don't know why though.
