Jose Mourinho has been heavily linked with replacing Louis van Gaal as Manchester United boss
United sources say they are not looking for, and have never wanted, a technical/sporting director and won’t create the role just for convenience sake.

It has been reported that Van Gaal would become technical director to allow Mourinho to take the manager's job.

But it is not going to happen.

United’s ‘model’ has always been to leave all football matters and transfer strategy in the total control of the manager, with the chief executive executing the deals. And that will not change whoever the manager is.

Louis van Gaal gave an emotional speech at the end of Manchester United's match against Bournemouth at Old Trafford

The smoke signals at Old Trafford are indicating that Van Gaal will stay in charge for the final season on his contract, regardless of the outcome of tomorrow’s FA Cup final.

Having failed to guide the club to Champions League qualification, it was thought Van Gaal would need to beat Crystal Palace and win the Cup to keep his job.

But he has been insisting for weeks that he will still be in the job next season and believes he retains the support of senior figures at Old Trafford. He has been openly telling people "see you next seaosn."

There certainly seems no appetite for change from the man who will make the decision, Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, who will advise the Glazer family, United’s owners.

Woodward sacked David Moyes – who was Sir Alex Ferguson’s own recommendation as his successor – but is loathe to do the same with Van Gaal, who was his appointment.

That would leave a club that has always prided itself on stability looking for their fourth manager in three years.

Many fans are desperate to see Mouorinho installed because of his remarkable track record of success at Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan where he beat Van Gaal’s Bayern Munich to win the Champions League in 2010.

Van Gaal and Mourinho have remained friends since the Dutchman promoted the former translator to his coaching staff at Barcelona in the late 1990s.

They have always had great respect for each other and even though it is no secret that Mourinho wants the United job he has been careful not to make any comments about his former boss during his time out of the game since being dismissed by Chelsea in December.

But the idea of two such strong characters working together simply does not fit. Both have huge egos, both have their own died-in-the-wool football philosophies and both are control freaks.

Van Gaal had a brief spell as a technical director at Ajax in 2005 but it ended in tears after falling out with manager Ronaldo Koeman and director Johan Cruyff. He has also rejected the offer of becoming technical director for the Dutch federation.

He wants to see out the final year of his contract at United and then retire to his villa on Portugal's Algarve.

Ever since Mourinho's departure from Stamford Bridge co-incided with United’s dismal run of results in December speculation has been rife that that he was was being lined up to take over from Van Gaal.

It is understood there was dialogue between United and Mourinho’s representatives but no agreement or contract offer has ever been made.

Even though United just failed to make the top four on goal difference from enighbours Manchester City, their improvement in the second half of the season, plus the emergence of promising youngsters like Marcus Rashford, appears to have convinced the hierarchy to ignore mutterings of discontent from the fans and allow Van Gaal to finish the three-year project he was appointed for - to oversee the club's transtion from the Ferguson era.

I have the patience to wait for a New manager but I have absolutely none for the club ambassadors who are still on the payroll...ffs

There seems to be a small army of them. Can accept their need to earn a wedge but sad to see some players who were idolised turn into mediocrity excusers.

I have some degree of sympathy for Graham Stuart who to me looked like a rabbit in the headlights in the recent piece he did with Sharp & Ratcliffe. Football media work is all propaganda, but it may as well be positive. Ex-reds don't resort to slagging off their club directly or indirectly.

Peter Reid (not on the club roster to my knowledge) did a short piece on Sky last Sunday I think it was and just spelt out some of the things we want and need without having to justify our desire for success and improvement.

I wouldn't expect any movement until early to mid-June. I'm sure the club are keeping several balls in the air currently and are in discussions with several candidates, some more advanced than others, and perhaps about to initiate / receive contact from more.

Euro 2016 begins three weeks from today and if we don't have a new manager by then I would be slightly concerned. That's entirely arbitary but it seems reasonable to expect this to take 4-5 weeks to resolve.

An extra few days, or week is fine if it means getting the right man.

The reason I do not believe Mourinho is realistic any more is that he is out of work, we have no manager, so there would be no real need to hold it up too long, unless of course he was waiting on man u and we are his second choice. At which point, I have to ask myself do we want a manager coming in disgruntled that he did not get the united job, and the answer is no.

Wouldn't mind being proven wrong, but just cannot see it.

Mr Mosh & his "people" want a top, top (my god I hate that phrase) manager.
There is little doubt that Mourinho has been contacted but there are others as he (JM) does want Utd ... but perhaps they don't want him?

I have also thought this, but at the same time if Unite really wanted Jose they could of gone and got him the second he left Chelsea, while they were still in the Champions League and in with a shout of top 4, they have left it longer then we have.

I know what you mean about second choice but its the way things are for us right now, same with players, getting Lukaku because the CL sides didn't take up the option...etc

Please let all that be true.

Any manager in the world given the choice betwen us and United would have us at second choice mate

Fact is Mourinho is one of the ones who is good enough that United could want him and who may be still interested in us should they decide nottom get him

Old phrase of not cutting your nose off to spite your face comes to mind

The only important thing for us to do in this is to not keep waiting indefinitely

I am certain we have a list of targets - Mourinho being at the top of that list, should we be kept dangling and the other people on are list start being approached then we will either give him a deadline to make a decision re us, or we wil just switch our attention to second/third on our list

Right now from the people i 'suspect' or have heard rumours from more reliabble sources we have on our list

Mourinho - no movement until United make their decision - after cup final at the earliest
Emre - No movement until after Sevillas cup final against Barca at the earliest
Koeman - No movement until after his meeting with the Saints board etc - at the earliest

Favre/De Boer/Bielsa/Pelligrini- No movment on these unless they are appraoched with concrete offers from other clubs

As long as we have contact with their agents etc and know the current situation as it changes with all of these then it's just a matter of waiting for certain events to unfold and seeing what other clubs interested in them will offer in comparision to what we have - wages and 'project selling'

I picture Moshiri singing the sixties classic to Bill
"Do you know the way to sign Jose"
