Yeah - I know what you are saying. I'm not sure age comes into it. It's all down to the individual. Any manager still in the management job in their 60s must have something about them. Martinez is pretty young - but totally inflexible. A good manager should be able to use the best tactics for the players available - not try to force a system on them.
I'd take any manager on their merits. Pellegrini worries me as a specific example, though. He doesn't look like he's got the hunger - but then again, you don't know how much of that is down to the public shafting City gave him early in the season.

I know everyone wants the best for Everton but some of the criticism of the likes of Emery Pellegrini etc. is ridiculous. It's clear now that we're not going to get Mourinho. Him Guardiola Ancelloti and Simeone are probably the continent's super managers. Prior to Moshiri's arrival we weren't even looking at the next tier down, we were looking at promising championship managers in the NW or who was available in the SPL. Now we're turning our noses up at managers who have won European trophies in three successive seasons, have won titles in England, and have won multiple league titles abroad. Let's get the best manager in that we can, let him build the team to as far as he can get it, then see what the next step is.
Criticism?
I don't think being critical and analysing the strengths and weaknesses of potential managers is in anyway stupid or ridiculous.

The best available manager who has won the Champions League and UEFA cup and also won titles in 3 countries is Van Gaal. Like him or not he has had success everywhere he has went. He always gives youth a chance. That Utd job was a poison for anyone after Fergie and yes he has spent 250 million but so have City Chelsea and Liverpool. For me the only issue is he is getting old and is a mad thing. I think that he still feels he has something to prove in the premiership. Get him and Rooney in.

The smackdown I meant was Emery's tweet of the subs bench. Deulofeu hadn't played a single minute since mid Feb so can understand him getting a touch upset by mid April even if his mild rebellion wasn't the right way to handle it. Whilst I wouldn't have blinked an eye if Emery had hauled him in from of the squad on the Monday morning and given him a dressing down, think the responding tweet was a quite pathetic way of asserting control. But then I have a pet peeve of managers disciplining staff, particuarly young players, in the full glare of the media.

Thanks for the article on Monchi, sounds a very interesting guy.
I'd have him ahead of de Boer or Koeman but that's not saying much.
Completely agree. Not sure where all the Koeman love came from anyway.

It'd be interesting to discuss his coaching philosophy. Do you want to give it a go?
I'm to lazy to even attempt to but luckily Outside Of The Boot wrote a really wonderful article on his philosophy, actually a really good read: http://outsideoftheboot.com/2015/07/28/tactical-philosophy-andre-villas-boas/

Interesting that it also notes he commented on the pressure of coaching in England and that he didn't want that exposure, may not even have an interest in coming back to manage in the Premier League.
