Roberto Martinez, philosophy on defending:

“As a manager, I want to defend but would I base the performance on wanting to keep a clean sheet? No. I base the performance on getting on the ball, having a big role, dictating and having a positive approach and scoring goals. Our team is top in the league for goals scored from open play."

“That’s down to the talent we have and the work we do, but that doesn’t mean I would neglect defending. You have to do both. I think that’s an easy way of giving a view on something, you have to go a bit deeper and my philosophy is winning games, not keeping clean sheets. Other managers prefer to be defensive, give you the ball and then there’s always an error. What I like is an action that’s about winning games and achieving things.”

There are other managers that build their teams first and foremost on solid defensive foundations - Guardiola does that for example, and Mourinho, and Moyes did.....

I think this summer we have a very rare opportunity to bring in a a Manager who normally we couldn't attract. Give them significant money including the lukaku sale and let them build their team.

You look at managers who are actually good and ambitious and they can compete against guadiola Van gaal klopp wenger and conte alone. The league is open and by no means a dead end job

Koeman is a good safe choice, but emery could be swayed. A solid foundation at a club, money to spend and potentially a chance to get away from a league where the top 2 spots are dominated every year.

Honest question, with no other motives at all, why do people think we could get Koeman?
Because we are a bigger and better club than Southampton and we should grow a set be proud of ourselves and go after a recognised top manager. Start with Jose and work down until someone says yes.

I agree with all that but don't reckon Koeman would come to us at this moment.

Jose Mourinho has never coached a national team
Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has rejected an offer to coach Syria, according to his agent.

In an email sent to Associated Press, Jorge Mendes said Mourinho told the Syrian FA that, "while he felt honoured to receive the invitation, he cannot at the moment accept it".

The Portuguese, 53, was sacked for a second time by Chelsea in December.

Mourinho, who has also managed Porto, Real Madrid and Inter Milan, has been linked with Manchester United.

It was reported last week Mourinho had started house-hunting in Cheshire after his representatives held talks with United.

Syria, who have never qualified for the World Cup, sacked coach Fajr Ibrahim despite reaching the Asia's third and final round of qualifying, scheduled to begin in August.

They are 123rd in the Fifa rankings and are the rank outsiders of the 12 countries in Asia still competing for two automatic places at the 2018 World Cup and a play-off spot.

Syria have played their home games in neighbouring Oman since the country was plunged into civil war five years ago.
