I believe Emery + Monchi was the Moshman's first choice. At the time I thought that move was very ambitious and unlikely to materialise as no club after winning 3 EL wouldn't resisit letting both their masterminds leave despite the clauses. Either that or we simply could not convince the duo enough to come to Premier League at this point. So obviously the next two choices were Koeman and FDB. I think Koeman's PL experience and shrewd transfer market business acumen has edged out FDB. Also his brother selling his sibling I think did him no benefit.

Koeman isn't my first choice, as my heart was set for Emery or Mancini who I rate highly but he does have a respectable personality who will be respected by the footballing community and players. He doesn't chat utter nonsense in media and is tactically sound enough. He'll probably be needing us give him a push in his career goal of managing top sides in Europe (Barca etc) and we need him to take us to the next level so we can attract Mourinho in 4 or 5 years time. Personally, ss long as Koeman can deliver a derby win, I'll be happy. Its been more than half a decade FFS! Its getting to a point of boiling frustration given our teams in recent years.

Yes, totally agree. On the Emery points & the highlighted. We can help each other. There's no way we'd attract a Mourinho type of Manager in our current state, but perhaps in 2-3 years time, who knows...

I suppose its an intelligence expectancy.

Barca, one of the top sides in the world go and hire someone whose epic fail in Spain is still laughed about and whose career peak has been stabalizing feyenoord and southampton.

I wonder if Gary Neville or Moyes took over WBA and improved them by 2 places if they would be considered?

Better still, how about Mark Hughes? Hes improved stoke and is also, like koeman, a former player.

It really is laughable.

Not saying that I think he will definitely be the next Barcelona manager but I don't see how it is laughable to consider he could end up there one day in the not so distant future.
Barcelona often look to hire ex players as Manager, he is highly regarded there from his playing days and is a former Assistant Manager there as well, which is why the comparison you use of Neville, Moyes and Hughes are by in large irrelevant.
Most people also consider recent history as much more of an indicator of likely success. His time spent at Valencia and AZ wasn't a total success but this was quite some time ago now. He has obviously learnt and grown as a Manager and has been successful at his recent positions which is why his stock is currently high.
His time here will be important for him as he will hopefully get the opportunity to show what he can do on the big stage of the PL with more financial backing, if he can do well here it would seem entirely plausible to me that Barcelona would look at him.

@Dutch Toffee why do the Dutch media think Koeman should have waited for the Arsenal or Barca jobs to come up?

He's not been a success in Spain before and not been amazing in England.....also his teams style is totally different to those two clubs.

Is his agent Dutch + sounds like a top agent hes got.
I don't really know why they think he should wait. Maybe because just like in England and everywhere else they do have their favourites they like to promote.

Imo it's stupid to just wait and hope for something that might or might not ever arrive. It's not like it's a given fact he will be offered the Barca job in the future (or the Arsenal one at that)

I do understand the continueing Barca links though. Koeman is a legend at Camp Nou and it seems that Barca like to appoint coaches with their dna.

It is laughable, I mean imagine one of the top teams in the world hiring someone who has achieved nothing........oh wait they hired Gérardo Martino who won the Paraguayan league once and Luis Enrique who won the square root of f'all but managed to get celta vigo to 9th.

Talking wham again zat

Koeman was always his first choice mate

Indeed.

Even though he might not have been mine, or lots of ours, first pick, the fact that he's just gone out and got the one HE wanted without giving too many sh*ts is quite awesome and bodes well.

Yep. RK was my first choice from the start, but I'd have been equally as happy with Emery.

I do also like the fact that he didn't appear to get too bogged down when it appeared that RK initially turned us down, and that he was willing to move on to another target in Emery.

Obviously, in the grand scheme of things it's irrelevant, as RK has decided to join, but it shows flexibility and that multiple 'high-profile' targets were identified.

It will be when he gets off his second holiday and compo is agreed !

Need to make an announcement today.

Too many blerts joining on that annoying trend of tweeting "Announce Koeman" as if the club will actually do it just 'cause they asked...
