3rd place in the World Cup, knocked out by the eventual winners isn’t a bad achievement to be fair

Not too bad, but considering the team, they performed as expected. It is difficult to judge the job national team coaches do - especially big football nations. It may say more about the job that has been done to foster good players in that country, than the coach. Anyway, Martinez had a 38% win percentage, and that's exactly what Silva has. Followed by a number of strange purchases, a team that could not defend itself, and players who no longer cared about him. Funny enough, he is linked to the Barcelona job.

Marcelino would be a hilariously big upgrade but it relies on Everton doing something sensible and smart soooo

Constant track record of overachieving, we (mostly) have the players for his system

Not sure if he speaks English tho...

We tend to get hung up on odd things, and this is led by Kenwright who in many ways is one of us and probably tails fan opinion a fair bit. Marcelino would have been an excellent choice in 2016. That was the summer Valencia got him, and he has finished them with consecutive top 4 finishes and won the cup, with a spend a fraction of what we have done. They had had 2 12th place finishes before he arrived. So a lot of interesting parallels there.

I remember people being put off by the Villarreal performance against Liverpool in the semi-finals of the Europa League putting people off and that he wasn't a big name. There was no acknowledgement it was a greta achievement to get to the semi finals of the competitions, especially in conjunction with finishing 4th, with a side that had only been promoted 3 seasons earlier.

His record at Valencia was 4th and 4th when they were 12th when he inherited them.

Essentially he is the exact sort of manager that we need currently. He takes underperforming or lower level sides to the top 6 and even the champions league places.

He is not a "winner" though which seems to dominate the thinking. Despite having got Koeman in who was a winner, and Silva who had won't things, what they had not done is show they can move a side from mid table to finishing regularly at the top end of a table, which is our first objective.

I'd be delighted with Marcelinho.

Pochetino didn’t speak English either when he took over Southampton

Really good insights & analysis here. The only nitpick I'd have is that making Europe in the other 4 top leagues is considerably "easier" than it is in the EPL. IMO, of course. And I say this as someone who really enjoys Bundesliga & La Liga. Serie A is basically a 3-4 team league, and Ligue 1 is a 1-team league (probably why it's called Ligue 1).

Yes I agree with that, it's a fair comment. The PL is the hardest league. The same principles apply though. I'd say Villarreal are probably closest to Aston Villa of the teams promoted (they are a hard team to categorise, as they are a small team who got to a CL semi final so it's hard to pigeon hole them). Relative resources would still indicate, getting them to the top 6 and ultimately 4th was an excellent achievement.

Likewise, Valencia are not too dissimilar to our own position. You have 2monsters in the league and a 3rd very well run team. We probably have 5 + 1 in terms of resources. That being said to get them from 12th to 4th is still very good.

From what i know about his time at Villereal and Valencia the main strength of the team was the togetherness and unity of the squad.

Never seen him being a tactician and i cant see how a 442 system would do well against the 3 centre mids alot of premier league sides use thesedays.

If we change the manager then for me it has to be for someone who plays 433 or similar and is a tactically astute chap who can develop players.

Moyes record since leaving Everton isn't very good and his style of play is totally outdated. Martinez was too stubborn and the bad results rightly cost him his job but i'll always believe he would've spent the millions Koeman was given on better quality players. Thing is if Moyes comes back I would be expecting us to finish around 10th, no way would he break into the top 6. We would have a better chance of doing so under Martinez. Neither are coming back anyway.

We won’t as he is a mid lower tier team manager. History can’t be rewritten he is just a Silva 0.5.

Thats fair enough but I really don't get too bogged down in what system managers play. The last 2 managers were meant to play 4-3-3 and neither have. My own view is if a manager has a system and knows how to execute it well then we will have success.

I'd say he has developed some players too.

For me, what we are looking for a manager to do, move a team from mid table to the top 6/4 he has evidenced better than anyone over the last 5 years.

With our current group of players i cant see how a manager could successfully play 433.

Thats until Gbamin is back and based upon his reputation and the little ive seen of him.

By the end of next summer i think we'll have the players.
