NFL Thread 2018

Suggest you do a little more research. The Steelers are the NFL's equivalent of the RS. Their coach has zero class, their players have zero class, they have a history of making dirty, career-threatening hits and generally cheating a lot.

Plus their QB ALLEGEDLY narrowly escaped a rape charge by ALLEGEDLY paying the victim huge sums of cash to shut up and disappear. Allegedly.

Not a team I would want to associate myself with.

If it's blue-collar industrial history plus economic collapse that resonates with you, you're a Detroit Lion. The club that gave us arguably the best running back to ever play the game.

Sanders was a fantastic running back, no question. Best to ever play the game? That's a tough call.

Sounds more like the Patriots, who are the kopites of the NFL as far as I'm concerned. Every other team's fans abhor them. The only difference between them and the RS is New England has actually won things in the last dozen years.

Hence my use of the word "arguably".

I'll listen to representations for Jim Brown... who else have you got?

Walter Payton. Emmitt Smith. Eric Dickerson. For starters. Sanders left the game at his peak -- stayed healthy, so a good move -- but one wonders what his stats could have been had he played a few more seasons. I wager he'd be the all-time rushing leader.

Patriots field large numbers of classy players, along with the odd bad apple. Those bad apples sometimes cheat, in collusion with their bond villain head coach... but the Steelers are on a different planet. A succession of dirty players in specific positions, like Hines Ward and JuJu Smith-Schuster, suggest deliberate coaching to play dirty and deliberate recruitment of players willing to play that way. Joey Porter once attacked a player from another team during the offseason in a casino, ffs. And how on earth can you look beyond a rapist as the team captain? It's probably the biggest open secret in the NFL. I mean, sure, the Patriots had a murderer on the roster (google Aaron Hernandez) but at least they distanced themselves as an organisation from the player. Rothlisberger still plays for the Steelers... the other guys on that squad play alongside him. If one of the guys on my team was a rapist, I'd be asking for a trade away to another club.

I have a fair number of friends who follow the NFL, and virtually the only thing we agree on is that Pittsburgh is a morally rotten organisation.

Payton and Dickerson I'll grant you, but Sanders and Smith played in the same era, against the same teams. Smith had a far better team around him and Sanders was the sole positive in a one-dimensional lions offense, so regularly faced 8 and even 9 men in the box keying on him. He was better than Smith IMHO. But it's a great debate!

And yet all one hears is praise for the Rooney family as owners. Now if Jerry Jones owned the Steelers....

He's baaaaaaack.

Good performance today from Tom, win me some points.

Pittsburgh is actually kind of boomtown right now after east coasters discovered that the city is kind of nice and you can buy a house for 1/5th the price of NYC, Boston et.al.

If you are looking for true ecomonic misery, Buffalo.

Agree on both counts, city-wise. I loved Pittsburgh when I was there a few years ago. And I also thought Buffalo was quite depressing.

my opinion on Smith - he was the catalyst for multiple super bowl victories, I know he had a better supporting cast than Sanders, but some of his playoff performances were nothing short of astonishing and ranks higher than Sanders, or Payton. In fact I'd rate him as the greatest.

I’ve had 2 hours kip since 6am Saturday after watching the college football, ufc and boxing last night now 10 hours of NFL . Then a shower and off the airport for a holiday. My 1st day will be in bed lol
