NHL

Not into ice hockey, but my eldest lad loves it. Took him a Manchester storm the other week and fully enjoyed it. Was surprised at how many people was there. They played Cardiff Devils and they brought an away following. Really enjoyed the game and the experience. Will defo be going a game or two next season.

Seems unlikely. He's at 0.64 gpg his last 3 seasons, so unless he starts scoring at a higher rate from age 36-40 he'll need ~3 more seasons to break Gretzky's scoring mark. That's a lot to ask.
He'll get it. You're right it'll probably take three to four seasons but even if he's just a lower line guy shooting on the powerplay and stealing empty netters he'll get there.

I never thought Ovechkin would get close as I always felt age would catch up to him and he would begin to slow down. Scoring around 50 at age 36 is incredible so it would be unbelievable if he pulls it off.

If he can hold that scoring rate for 3 more seasons that may be more impressive than the lead itself. All the greats had massive drop offs late in their career. He’ll be 41 on an 18 goal season in Winnipeg chasing this record.

He’s gonna do it ain’t he. A record that seemed impossible to beat, Ovechkin is on course to over take the great one.

That's only half the story, though...goals weren't even Gretzky's strong point, if you're just crunching numbers; he still has more career assists than anyone else's career points although Jagr tried his best but still needed to almost reach Social Security age (and play 246 more games) to just get near.

It's nuckin' futs.

Gretzky career assists - 1,963 (1,201 of them were even strength)
Ovechkin career points - 1,407
Second highest career points (Jagr) - 1,921
Owns 8 of the Top Ten single season points records as well (1,2,3,4,6,7,9 and 10)...FFS

I'm not shyt-canning anyone else BTW, I loved Cam Neely as a player and he's not even the top 250 in career points...but, yeah. And yes, keeper equipment has gotten healthier over the years so it's a good record, if he reaches it.

I didn't even get to see Gretzky in his Oiler years but not bad, for a beanpole of a kid. I'd love to be alive to see the person who takes him down to 2nd but it's an insane record (career points).

Ovechkin has got him on goals per game avg, though...so far. Stats, innit.

Gretzky will always be number 1 for me, but fair play to Ovechkin if he does break his record. That post is bit of a contradiction i admit, but it's how i feel.

I'm in the mood for some NHL memory lane, in photo (just can't be bothered to talk about Everton right now)...I'll start.

Two rules, you can't use a photo that shows the name on the jersey or put their name in the post...this is memory lane, after all. Everyone can reply to it with the name, though...and an anecdote/comment, if you wish.

*goes big game hunting*

Come on, puckheads...

Nearly 30 years later and still can’t believe my Isles beat the Penguins in ‘93.
Below is one of my favorite players and perhaps the best player not in the Hall of Fame. Here’s a clue—-screw Dale Hunter

Scored his 50th of the season tonight to tie Gretzky and Bossy for the most 50 goal seasons in a career; for the 9th time.

He’s also now got the record for the most goals in a single season aged 36 and over.

No signs of slowing down just yet and I think if he stays healthy and injury free, he’s got 4 more years in him. Needs 115 to break the all time record. It’s certainly doable.
