I had read something earlier this year about the evolution of the blue line. I think skating is the dominant characteristic you need to play defense now, no more Hatcher brothers hulking at the back (Chara an exception, but he has exceptional skill). With better skating defensemen comes better passing and some good shooting too, but I think the days of lasers from the blue line may have ended with The Mighty Ducks.
Tune in today and you'll see exciting young 2 way defenders like Makar and Heikinanen and wingers switching back to cover when these guys push forward. It seems the strategy of the game is much more agile when you have players that are much more agile.

What's your basis for comparison? Most conversions fail, but it's a fun gig.
If you want "was great in the 80's but is average at best now" you'd maybe match Forest or Everton.
