NHL

Hockey is awesome to watch live. You see everything even in the nosebleed seats and even 4K TVs can't come close to replicating it.

Its just that NHL hockey is awful. You watch 5 minutes of olympic hockey and you instantly see how awful and cramped NHL hockey is.

Plus whole regular season is pointless and there is literally no reason to watch a 82 game glorified preseason. The game is a lot different from say Gretzky/early Mario era as goalies now have more equipment than bomb diffusers these days so goals only come from screens. The offensive defenseman is extinct, if you have a great blue line shot you aren't playing in the league. For some reason defenders are also still allowed to fling themselves on the ice and spread 10ft from skate to stick to block pucks. People say stuff like 3OT playoff hockey is great, its not, its dump and chase rubbish hockey that always ends w/ a rubbish goal.
Except for this one... ;) ;)

If you could compare the oilers to a footy team which would it be?
Well, the Oilers are one of the most storied franchises in history, based mainly on their Stanley Cup wins through the 1980's.

They had the greatest player in Wayne Gretzky, supported by legends like Messier, Kurri and Coffey.

They've struggled with the transition of finances and poor drafting since those years but now are returning to contender status thanks to having, arguably, the best player in the league in McDavid.

I am going for Argentina, world champions, best player in the world in the 1980's, decline through the 1990's but now have the best player in the world (Messi).

Timelines don't square up perfectly, but it's a great question and that's my stab at it.

Used to have a season ticket for my local team over here. Loved that period. Sadly the lack of interest from the media and sponsors, make it a 4th rate sport at best. Level started dropping rapidly and I eventually stopped going.

Still look out for their results however. Love the sport, but not on television.

I started following it in 1998.. I was playing an ice hockey game with a friend on the PlayStation, we had North American all stars Vs World all stars.. I was world.. I checked one of the other teams players with one of mine and career ending injury came up, so I said whoever the player that made the hit played for was going to be my team... it was Sandis Ozoliņšh and he played for Colorado Avalanche so I've supported them since.. have a good shot at it this year.

Avalanche will be a threat in the playoffs, it's rare that a team wins without having built up a couple of deep playoff runs prior to their cup win and I'm not convinced the goaltending will hold up.

But, they are a great team to watch and have every chance.

They have a great pair of kids but boy do I hate the Avs.

i am 29, so...

Good Islanders?
Good Mets?
Good Everton?

Good Jet- oh wait, we’ve never been good.

No, have to blame the family for moving to Long Island and my dad adopting them!

My luck with sports? I’m very blessed
  • Sign a player for a record 10 year deal and he hits sub .200 in his opening 25 years.
  • Have a Cy Young best pitcher in 35-years, and we lose 1-0 every game he plays
  • Butt Fumble
  • Qualify for Champions League and beaten in a con move
That’s rough. Missed all the glory

That’s rough. Missed all the glory

All of the glory.
Closest with Everton was a 2009 cup final.
Closest with the Mets was a Beltran stop and stare in 2006.
Jets, and Isles getting to divisional games hasn’t been horrendous, but not really sure what winning would feel like to be honest.

Used to smash the NHL games on megadrive in the mid 90s and loved them, then went to a Hartford Whalers game when visiting relatives in Connecticut and was very underwhelmed by it, half the crowd seemed uninterested and I had a real hard time following where the puck was. Pretty much killed my enthusiasm for the sport dead.

This video is ace though

I don’t think Rook has watched hockey in the last, like 15 years. You can still block shots but there are several quality offensive defensemen, the shooters are more precise than ever, and the players are a lot fitter so energy levels stay up deep into the overtime periods when they pile up. It’s not Big Sam on ice like it was in the early 2000s.

I watch the occasional playoff game and yes its not as dreadful as the dead puck era, but for the most part gave it up about a decade ago. I try but can't get into it anymore. I like the sport and watch the heck out of olympic hockey the years they don't cater to the NHL w/ NHL ice. I won't deny there are great players these days, Ovie would have 900 goals by now if he played in the 80-early 90s. NHL hockey just seems to do their best to bring down skillful players. You leglistate stuff like an extremely mild curve in a stick but nothing on goalies and if you aren't to do anything about keeper equipment make the goal a bit bigger or something.

Jeez just look at this

Then there are these stupid rules, like a shootout win is 2 pts, a shootout loss is 1 pt, why? just make a win 5pts, a shootout win 3 and a shootout loss 2.
