Nick Clegg V Nigel Farage.

The thing is, how many of us can honestly say that any political party mirrors our views on health, education, immigration, taxation, crime etc.?

It seems likely that most of us compromise on a whole lot of things when it comes to politics, and it's no doubt similar with UKIP. Of course, as we've seen in Ukraine, things could be a whole lot worse, but they could also be a whole lot better.

I actually like Nigel Farage, the person. I think he has somewhat definable political beliefs that resonate with a lot of people and he isn't "trolling" the political system.

However, he's leader of a bunch of complete nutters, so all Farage ends up doing is presenting a respectable front for a lunatic asylum, which is all that UKIP collectively will ever be.

Farage would have made a decent front bencher for the Tories if it were not for his ego and his polarising EU views.

Yes they are. But more dangerous. They don't promote racism, which is unacceptable, they promote xenophobia, which is fine.
They suck up people's fear and throw it back to them.

Which is a shame isn't it? The free movement of people throughout Europe is (imo) far and away the best thing about the EU. It's a crying shame that trade isn't as free as people are.

Had UKIP gone after anachronisms such as the CAP then they'd have been more credible rather than banging on about foreigners all the time. I mean they described themselves as broadly libertarian when they first started, yet now want to micromanage the movement of people.

I suppose politics is nothing if not lowest common denominator stuff these days.

And that is the other thing. Some of the people representing UKIP are absolutely awful. Godfrey Bloom for instance, or the bloke that thought the floods were due to gay marriage. They kinda render you speechless.

I'd prefer it if this was a fight to the death using only saws and pans rather than a political debate.

I would like a mature discussion about Europe, but this wont be it I am afraid.

It's never likely to happen though is it? Whenever political 'debates' happen on television it's akin to Jeremy Kyle for middle class folk. I don't think any televised political debate is designed to inform people but instead entertain them by confirming the views they already had.

I'm not British born, but I have a lot of time for Nigel Farage. Like it or not, there is a place for a party like UKIP, and it's pretty ignorant to just label them as crackpots and extremists when their views seriously challenge the consensus.

The main parties are only superficially different as they all fight over the center ground when it comes to the role of the State - you're talking about a 1 or 2% difference in the size of Government between any of them.

That's just it though, I haven't seen/heard much from UKIP on any kind of small state line. Managing the flow of people certainly isn't small state.

They don't want a 'small government' they want some pretend England that never existed. And it's England they want, not Scotland or Wales. How can they not be crackpots when they are called the UK Independence Party?

Because they don't want to continue to use wealth created in Britain to fund the EU? I don't see what is crackpot about that.
If that's crackpot, then countries like Switzerland and Norway are also crackpots.
You can be a open and tolerant country without giving up your sovereignty.

Because they named themselves to give the suggestion of being resistance fighter. It was created to campaign for removal from the EU, which has helped create a much more open business environment for the UK.

Norway and Switzerland are completely different economies who do not need to be part of the EU, they have very individual economies. I genuinely cannot see why anyone would try and remove UK from EU. The EU is a greater good situation, in the same way taxes from London fund poor areas of the North.

Doesn't sound like a very good deal for Londoners.
