Regardless of whether or not I understand or agree with him, some people were angry because he came across as ignorant. His statement was that it’s a symbol of something that his Christian world view is opposed to or something to the effect. Many would say that there isn’t any Christian doctrine or teaching that would oppose wearing the armband. If the thinks there is, I think the general intelligent Christian population might think he’s ignorant. Now I’m not disagreeing with what is the prevalent attitudes of the church, but not sure it has anything to do with the actual religion. I think there are also many people out there that think those attitudes are ignorant. I’m simply addressing the perception.
That being said, I’ve got no problem with not wearing the armband. Even if it’s a club policy to support the rights of some group. If all he said was that I’m not comfortable with the club compelling us to wear the armband because of a variety of reasons, messaging, individuality, etc., no problem. But he didn’t, he blamed it on his religion.
Not trying to start a holy war here, just explaining why I think some reacted the way they did. Him then citing his phone malfunctioned was also not exactly a stroke of genius.
