Another new British transfer record was set when Alan Ball moved from Everton to Arsenal in December, 1971, for a fee of £220,000. Ball, a 1966 World Cup winner with England, had been with the Merseyside club for five years before he made a much publicised move south. He made his first appearance for the Gunners in a match at Nottingham Forest. This picture shows Ball before making his home debut against former club Everton on the first day of 1972. It's an image that helps to remind us that even though we live in an era of unprecedented hype, a media scrum surrounding a major new signing is not an entirely new thing in the game- Bally does not look that happy does he.....
