Well he replaced the Golden Vision , and on the terraces then like me now old gits like me wrote him off when Joe was a young lad , and in my teens I defended him to the hilt, Joe did extra training sessions, He led the line ran his socks of for the cause -I was fed up in telling them he would become a great blues centre forward they scoffed me rubbish they said - therest is history as they say!I honestly do not know how you can single out one player.
He started off as a wing half - we had to chase him for his signature as a youth player as Matt Busby was after him too!Joe Royle was a monster of a lad at 16 years old...Debut against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road as their ground was named .
The outstanding thing for me was My Hero.... Joey.. then played for Blackpool ...The one and only Alan Ball.
Alan Ball in my opinion made players play..
Joe Royle had a great player that made him become the player he was .. take nothing away from Joe he earned his place in our glorious history .
Funnily enough i was talking with an Oldham fan only yesterday and he said to me Joe Royle made Oldham and said 17 years he was their manager ..made them change the colours to Blue and White.....
16 and played for Everton how good is that ...?

I got that off the Blue Correspondent Website. It has random match reports there. The search facility didn't work for me, but you could try looking through the other excellent stuff that they have on there :used to love these in the Echo ( back when it was a decent paper ) on Monday night
My favourite was around 64-65 when George commented on the way Catterick put Dennis Stevens to man mark ( as was the style briefly then ) Bryan Douglas, who pulled the strings for Blackburn
The cartoon showed Douglas at the half time refreshment kiosk counter saying 'tea and a wad' with Stevens right tight up on his shoulder saying...'Twice.'
is there a link or a website to see more
Do you know back in 1980 England International, Blackburn Rovers player mentioned above Brian Douglas { a great Rovers forward} had a market stall selling general goods at Clitheroe market outside Blackburn with a sign saying former player - how times have changed nowadays he would have been rich , and retired My older Brother reckons he was a great player!used to love these in the Echo ( back when it was a decent paper ) on Monday night
