My hero mate when He first came in to the team as a youngster and cemented his place struggled a bit - if this forum would have been in action in those days it would have been bad comments on him as he replaced the golden vision as a kid the old fans around me Jibbed me every week as I could see he had something and argued with them - He worked so hard - great in the air , and held the ball well upfront to link in the midfield a complete centre forward hence my avatar.
I did not look at his goal record he was just my hero took over duties of penalty taker off Bally who started to miss them after a great record - The Joe used to thump them high usually into the top corner under the bar!
An England international Like the Latch never played enough games for his country;)

......there have been a few 'old game' clips posted recently and they act as a reminder of how good Joe Royle was with a football at his feet. A couple of example show him with his back to goal dropping a shoulder and then going the other way to deliver a cross from which we scored. Paul Bracewell regularly used the same trick to great effect. Fine player was Big Joe and worthy of the adulation, pity about his back problems.

Graeme Sharp was a favourite of mine, brilliant target man. The likes of Gary Lineker and Tony Cottee said they didn't realise how good he was until they played alongside him. I chatted with Tony Thomas (ex Everton) who said he shielded the ball so well you didn't see it if you were marking him.

Nice that Lukaku can be genuinely compared to these great CFs.
