Just wondering how our modern day footballers would perform on pitches like that. The pitches back then were mainly awful. Did teams not employ groundsmen. Just wondering why pitches back then were like no mans land .

Proper drainage.
After a while the pitches get compacted and it costs money to dig it up and relay it.
False economy, but if you're skint and or tight

Goodison was generally better than most for longer but even weve had some bogs
