I know he's not popular with Toffee fans, for numerous reasons I would imagine, but was a solid up and coming player for BFC with Bally's genius about to take off and were never going to keep hold of either of them. Was fearsome in the tackle as Peter Osgood among others would testify too. He did what he did for the reds and had quite an all round career. A cousin of mine a left sided defender had a trial for with the Tangerines around the time of Hughes eminent departure but broke his ankle in training. Close as he got :)

65/66 more likely - wasn't the infamous 3rd round cup tie at Blackpool in 1966 his debut?
His debut was certainly at Blackpool in 65/66. Not, however in the FA cup, we didn't lose any FA cup games in 65/66. It was a league game, Joe was 16 the Cat dropped the GV and played young Joe. We lost and the Cat was jostled getting on to the coach after the match.

Don't pay any attention to the sensationalist who say the Cat was kicked, he was pushed as he boarded the coach.

No... Joe Royle made his debut at Blackpool 15 th January 1966 in a league game and the only other game that season was Dirty Leeds away in April.
Can,t ever remember playing Blackpool in
a cup game.....
Royles debut was the day Alan Ball took the Pish out of us in a masterclass performance with him at the forefront of everything Blackpool threw at us...
