Can never quite understand when viewing these pictures and others of the 84/85 season how our average attendance was only around 31,000, particularly when you take account of the density of the crowd on the terraced sections in those days.
I think Man Utd were averaging around 40k,the RS 33k and we had 32k,dark,dark times for the economy, unemployment around 3 million, football was frowned upon by the establishment,I was on a Youth Opportunities Programme cable jointing with British Telecom around then earning the princely sum of £23.50 a week and following the Blues here, there and everywhere lol

Thatcherism killed of our big industries to defeat the trade Unions - killed the attendances - could not wait to ban clubs from Europe too ....political stats that affected attendances way back then for sure - the slump may have come it was certainly in that era sped up by her Governments - sad but unfortunately true - the days of working man's football in all respects was ending sadly .... admission prices rose etc -
