I think Man Utd were averaging around 40k,the RS 33k and we had 32k,dark,dark times for the economy, unemployment around 3 million, football was frowned upon by the establishment,I was on a Youth Opportunities Programme cable jointing with British Telecom around then earning the princely sum of £23.50 a week and following the Blues here, there and everywhere lol

£1.90 into Gwladys Street back then, but as you say wages were a fraction of today.

On the right our first real investor, Dr Baxter with others set up the new EFC board broke away to give EFC an interest free loan to build Goodison Park on a disused Market Garden on Goodison road that set the tone of the rivalry from day one....

Don't know why the photo has "Mr Kelly" as Everton Chair. Tory Orange anti Home Rule Houlding was Chair of satan's spawn, which he created, from 1892 to his death in 1902, during which time the Liberals and pro Home Rule Mahon (1892- 1895) and Dr James Baxter (1895-1920) were Chairmen of Everton.

The photo looks more like George Mahon:

Misprint & incorrect thanks for pointing that out - Fans don't realise how powerful Holding was, he tried to pinch our name along with his ground rent hike 3x the original rent at Anfield - plus he was making a fortune out of the ale food etc as the crowds increased - our fans plus players built that ground from an old running track - & the cheeky sod hiked the rent - James Baxter took an age to dispose of him - the final meeting that rubber stamped our move was a hostile meeting in Liverpool library - Holding thought it was a big bluff -
History states otherwise - only the FA overruled him from pinching our name of our club - hence we spawned the devil LFC - which is Anfield area FC .....

The story of the split is fascinating and is a very good subject for a sociological study of late 19th century in terms of the power of Houlding and his Tory, anti (Catholic) Irish, Orange/Liverpool Protestant Association and the "Working Men's Conservative Association. He controlled the City as Mayor from 1897-98, and most of the RS directors were also Orangemen. Additionally, there was a very strong Masonic membership on that Board - Houlding founded one new Lodge and also attended two others. As a brewer and hotelier he tried to monoploize Everton, in terms of advertising at the (Anfield) ground, and the players had to use his Sandon Hotel as changing facility.

The majority of the early Everton Board by contrast were non-conformist- (non CofE) with many Methodists, some Catholics, politically Liberal, pro Irish Home Rule, and favouring temperance as regards alcohol. There were a small number of Freemasons on the new Goodison Everton Board, but I am certain there were no Orangemen.

So, there was a lot of tension at the Club before the infamous rent hike, which was the straw that broke the camel's back.

You are quite correct that, after he had been ousted by the majority Directors, and they moved over to Goodison, Houlding tried to keep ownership of the name "Everton", but the F.A. ruled that he could not, as he had been outvoted.

His first manager was the Monaghan Orangeman John McKenna, who was also involved in the WMCA and the LPA.
