It's merely another way of saying the league is won over a season.
Vice versa - maybe we should have kept Andy Gray, & not purchased Gary Lineker etc.......

The RS only had to then win that last game away at Chelsea (which they did) to secure the title, as we were then behind them to such an extent that even winning the last two games (which we did) we could still not catch them.
