Exactly right mate. As an 11 year old I was carried away by the newness of it all, we were champions and it all seemed natural that we just had ideas and made them come true. But my dad fumed from the word go that it was badly designed and not as good as Man Utd for example who were building new stands with no obstructions. The lack of space was a factor of course. Also rumours abounded that the cost influenced the decision to sell Alan Ball. It was big and grand but it was not in tune with the other stands and inexcusable even then to have view of goal mouth blocked by posts. On the point about whether the huge vocal support under the old stand was also lost I only have the sketchiest memory of noise coming from underneath the stand any way so cannot really say. My recollection was that main vocal support still came from two ends in terms of chants but sides produced that growling thunder which really made us a hostile place to visit.

When they built that stand within about a year of it opening my dad stopped going, and barely went again for about 12 years. He had been standing on the that old terrace since the late 50s, in the same area, where every week it was always the same faces. After that went it wasn't the same for him, didnt take to that new stand at all and never found a new spec. Saying that when he first took me in 84, when I was 11, we went in the main stand, for me it was amazing, but I can still remmeber him telling me it was better as it was before they built that stand.

I think I'm on that pic somewhere. I was standing in the Goodison Road Paddock with me da down at the GSE end of the ground. In other words, just in line with where Hunt unleashed his shot into the top corner.....
Only stood in that part of the ground three times...all derbies. Lost the Charity Shield match depicted here. Lost 3-0 when Sandy Brown scored that diving own goal. But best of all was in 1967 in the cup....what a night.
The Charity Shield game was still a very memorable occasion to see the three trophies after a very special summer.
And I felt better a few days later when Ball put two past Liverpool to win 3-1 in the league. Most blues recall that as Ball's match but I cannot recall who scored our other goal. No doubt somebody will fill me in.
