Old Everton Pictures

I was right behind the goal that night, there was sod all wrong with it. But remember it came out later that Inter among other clubs had bribed the referee!!!

I was in the then Goodison Rd paddock and saw it side on, VERNON was onside, but the clip I saw shows YOUNG in an offside position, like I said, stricter Interpretation then, (brown envelopes not withstanding, which wouldn't surprise me at all...it's all well documented) which gave the Reff an 'out' to call it...if he needed one.

The Killer was the 2nd leg.

We went in with no recognised LB, Harris or Stevens filling in and an unknown 18y.o. making his debut...back 4's, sweepers, all new stuff for Harry and the team, we were playing tactical catch up really and weren't quite ready for it.

All a bit coulda, woulda, shoulda; If we had played them in the form of April 63 not Sept 63 we would've battered them.

Sorry to keep this going, but it's been bugging me all day this no Left Back thing, so I did a bit of trawling...still can't find that clip of the home game though.

Meagan played at LB for the 1st 4 games
Newly signed Sandy B. in the next 2
Parnell Played Vs Ipswich - in which Gabriel and Kay were rested
Harris (or Stevens) played LB in the home leg - with Vernon returning presumably from injury.
Brown returned for the League game
Harris (or Stevens)* played in the away leg, with Harvey coming in for the presumably injured Gabriel

* my albeit somewhat stretched memory nags at me that Stevens actually was LB

Brown came back in for the next game - The Derby...My conclusion is;

Brown was signed too late to be eligible.

Brown played the next game H to Arsenal
Then either Harris or Stevens played LB Vs Birmingham A

Re the unamed person in the picture of a few weeks ago.
I made enquiries with the Liverpool Record Office and today have received this email. the mystery goes on.....
I am sorry to report that despite trying numerous old Evertonians, including the Heritage Society, that no one has been able to identify the person in the top right of image 796/EFC/26/2/363.

I am sorry that we have not been able to help.

An answer at last!

In my Bible B Harris wore the no 3 shirt Mr Versatile played at left back away v Inter Milan att 70,0000 got beat 1-0 Harvey had a very good game stepping in for jimmy Gabriel -we also went on to get beat 2-1 at Anfield on the following Saturday:mad:

In my bible Harris and Stevens played in both legs ,Harris no.3.Stevens no.8 first leg.
Harris 3 Stevens 4 second leg.
Harris against Birmingham wore 3.
Stevens 8....It is noted that Stevens played all 42 league games wearing no.8..apart from one game against Fulham away he wore no.4
Assumingly in place of Gabriel who had missed the previous 5 games

My late fathers hero - I was so sad when I went on the ground tour david had just started his illness later tobecome a heart attack RIP the Cannonball kid!

....I have told the story a few times, Joey, but I played for a side managed by Dave Hickson. He'd ring every Friday to see if everything was ok and my folks would run to the phone to catch a word such was the awe he was held in for their generation. He was certainly a character, training under floodlights on a concrete surface he would think nothing of sliding if he had a chance to score despite getting on in years.

I lent my older brother the cannonball kid the first words out of his mouth were I wish my Dad could have seen this book in it you could see what a hard bugling centre foreward he was bad disciplinary record we sold him my dad was at Anfield wit approx 80000 blues as they did not want him to end up at Liverpool!
