I miss The Crown

And any pub that allowed you to smoke draw as long as you carried on drinking

I moved up to Norris Green in 1974, live and lived three minutes from The Crown, been in it twice, didn’t believe it the first time, although I believe upstairs in there was pretty civilised!

….my daily walk to school took me through here, and on Sundays if my Dad wasn’t in one Gregsons Well he’d be in the one opposite.

Looking down Brunswick Road the Spinners used to play in the Gregsons Well on the right hand side.

….Roscommon Street. There used to be a plaque at the bottom that said ‘Henry Morton Stanley’, the bloke who bumped into Livingstone lived there.

Where it says Repairs that used to be the Rossie (Roscommon cinema).

….the Majestic on London Rd opened in 1937. I remember going to see ‘Summer Holiday’ there in 1963, my Mum was a cleaner in the place for a bit. Sadly the building is no longer there;

I use to play against the Blue Union tough team, I played for the Metal Box in the business league on a Saturday

And Speke Argyle in the Liverpool Sunday league, remember mad Harold

Jimmy O’Leary best amateur around at the time

Fat Harold with the Canada and John O’Leary, played in Kirkby, coincidently Harold’s wife Myra is getting buried today.

Was that the O'Leary who played for Fantail winning the National Sunday Cup?

Yes, John died two or three years ago, Spurs signed him when he was very young, he didn’t last long, not because he wasn’t up to it, but one of his first jobs there was to mop the dressings rooms, he said “ My mam does that for a living, cleaning out, I’ve come here to play football” so his face didn’t fit after that.
