Terry Gilmore had the Oak, a good few years ago, Terry was a very good amateur goalie, he came from the same area in town has Harold when they were growing up.….John worked for Otis in Kirkby, I had the pleasure of meeting him and the greater pleasure of playing against him a few times. A lovely, modest lad.
I remember seeing Fat Harold in the Royal Oak on Muirhead but didn’t play at the same time as him.
I played a lot in The Collegiate Yard a lot of Sunday afternoons after the pubs closed, it used to finish up fifteen or more a side, happy days.….remember playing footy in Friary yard. Shaw St Park was where I spent many hours kicking a football.
A great thread this Eggs, all the old streets bringing back lovely memories, don’t know why I haven’t noticed it before now!
Well the lad who got married and lots of his mates lived around Lytton Street and drank in the pub there, can’t think of the name of it at the moment, it became famous/ infamous around the 1970’s. Just come to me The Boars Head,….I lived a hundred yards away.
What was the name of the speedway team that raced there and was the star rider Terry Craven or did he ride for another speedway team?
The Everton Palace picture house ( cinema) was just across the road facing the pub.
@Eggs was it you the knew Tommy Wheeldon snr?, his lad Tommy jnr is doing really well here in Calgary
He is the coach and GM of the pro football team here, he was a good player back in the day as well
