Opinion of Kenwright from an outsider

I'm a Sunderland fan so I obviously have no connection to the club but I'm interested why Bill Kenwright is so unpopular amongst supporters?

In an age of soulless, foreign ownership, I'd have thought a genuine local supporter would be a a well liked figure.

Does it go back long term or recently?
So by now you've had some replies, mostly of a similar nature - give us your before and after take on the matter

Not everyone hates him, but those who do are quite vocal. It's like that old truth about politics: The longer a politician or party is in power the more people become dissatisfied with them. It's a kind of law. And we haven't had any success to offset that. How much you blame that on Kenwright....you'll find all sorts of opinions there. Personally, I think the goal scored a massive own goal by supporting moves to found the Premier League...and we then promptly got left behind as we weren't in any kind of position to capitalize. We've never caught up. Greed, eh, bloody hell...

I don't think nationality has any impact on whether someone is a good or bad owner.

Bill doesn't own the club either anymore tbf. But when he did, there was no real investment in the team at a time when we had the nucleus of a good side, and he also tried to take us out of the city to Kirkby.
He’s still got too much to say and he only has 1.72 per cent of the shares,If he was chairman at Sunderland you would understand him a lot better and if you’ve got the slightest bit of sense you wouldn’t bleedin’ like him.

I knew absolutely nothing about him but having read everybody's comments, I can fully understand why he isn't well liked.

Sounds like he's mislead the fanbase for years with club finances, selling top players and trying to move stadium outside of the city is never going to prove popular.

There may be a clamour for him to leave but I can't see it. Being chairman of his boyhood club will be a huge ego trip that he'll cling on to it for dear life.

Plus I'd imagine, he'll definitely want to be chairman moving into the new stadium

Here is my thoughts...

football has sadly changed now.. all these fickle modern day fans care about now is winning and nothing else, they don’t go much deeper than the first eleven and if they win or not, they don’t give a damn about being a part of something, sharing the highs and lows with other fans who are the same as them.
unfortunately Bill Kenwright no longer fits in with that... his crime.. he simply doesn’t have enough money.. I will challenge anybody to say if he had the dosh it would be provided to the manager straight away.. go as far as to say he would give the club the new stadium money too if he had it.
I have Liverpool fan mates who said exactly the same as fans do about Kenwright with David Moores.. he was as big a red as Kenwright is a blue... the reds got there wish and first got Hicks and Gillette then once they were run out of town they got John Henry and FSG. My red mates cry and moan all the time that although they have had recent success the club is now a souless yank manufactures business much like KFC or Burger King.. they walk to the match alongside Tarquin from Surrey and Ivor from Somerset instead of Tommy from the Dingle and Billy from Kirkdale.. people they sadly have nothing in common with, they sit with these people and can’t talk about what was in the Echo.. the pair of shoes they bought from Greaty market which fell to bits after 2 weeks, or how they waited ages for a Delta Taxi.. they don’t even know who Dickie Lewis is.. by the way this happend to the reds years and years earlier.. the point I am trying to make is Kenwright still has his old local values, he still has that old blue tradition that although it sadly does‘nt get you much finance wise is still worth much more as in a link to the past and what the club stands for.
I bet people now.. that in another ten years there will be Man City fans from Deansgate or Hulme who although they will have another six leagues and four European Cups will still wish for the old Kippax and when the Club belonged to them instead of having to share it across the globe with every Gloryhunting Tom.. [Poor language removed] and Harry who has bought a scarf..
At the end of the day traditions and proper footballing values are much more important over money.
what’s the point in winning Leagues and Champions Leagues if when you win them the Club no longer feels like your own anymore because it’s been diluted by Gloryhunters and owners who are only there for financial gain..
Kenwright and Moores might not of fitted in with the modern game because they simply don’t have enough cash but you can’t deny there hearts values and traditions which is far more important...

sorry folks rant over...
You sound more like a red, who's alienated by the modern anfield experience than an actual blue. What's wrong with Tarquin from Surrey anyway? Paragraphs are your best friend buddy.?

Big blue but has no idea how to run a football club.

Simple as that. His backers use the "but hes a blue" but ultimately whether you support a football club has no bearing on whether you can run one.

Im a HUGE fan of Amazon. I would be a distinct failure, like Kenwright at Everton, in running the company.

  1. Kenwright lied to supporters about the stadium soon to fail safety measures, just to push through an awful move to Kirkby (outside of the city, in a retail park with a tesco as its neighbour).
  2. Kenwright said the money for Kings Dock, which would have beent he best stadium in the country at the time, was ringfenced. It was not, there was no money.
  3. He did not entertain owners such as City's who were interested. Instead he looked for a buyer who would keep him in power.
  4. Bill Kenwright once said that the chairman doesnt run the football club. Yes, he said this.

The list goes on, but some of the things he has said.

No properly ran football club looks at Everton as an example.

if you google Kenwright lies it brings a thread up from here, from 2008. THIRTEEN YEARS ago and he is still here, the club has gone backwards. He declared himself the biggest fan, yet still controls power when he is absolutely not required. It is not about HAVING MONEY, we had him without money and his lies were brought forward over, and over, and over again. It is about him, holding on to his trainset without actualyl doing anything.

He is not, and has never been a good thing for Everton football club. He doesn't have the qualifications, the experience. Unfortunately, we appear to be seeing the same thing with Moshiri as well. Communicating to your customer base via Jim White is an absolutely woeful strategy. All Moshiri had to do regarding this whole change of the club is explain the situation, explain the revie wand why its needed and the steps moving forward. He would ahve gained some time, some respect for it.

Being a supporter is not enough to run a football club.Nobody on this forum can say they are qualified for it either but people would be a lot more understanding and supportive if he, or those in charge had any track record of providing a clear plan, a clear identity for the club and the team and actually having something about them.

Theres only 2 ways he'll leave.
Thrown out by Moshiri or the next fool
Or
Carried out feet first.
Never of his own accord

He’s a wolf in sheeps clothing who’s made millions out of Everton and used the club for his social standing, without ever really contributing much and overseeing the longest barren period in the clubs history.

BUT

He can get you two tickets to a west end show…..so not all bad.
And he can’t even do that if it’s the latest Andrew Lloyd Webber!

We've all been through this about this gobshoite a thousand times. Why regurgitate it it fot a "Sunderland" supporter?
