Why do you get a yellow card in game if your caught diving but if you manage to successfully dive and get retrospectively punished you get a two game ban? Doesn’t make sense, surely the ref should get punished.

Not the same punishment because it wasn't spotted in the game so we profited from a penalty and goal, and a subsequent point for the draw.

Now, I know a 'yellow card with no ban and no penalty' doesn't equate to the same as 'a penalty during the game plus a two match ban' - there's no way to set a correct punishment to allow for the fact we profited from the decision, but that's what they are trying to do.

The punishment doesn't fit the crime (because there is simply no punishment that would), but the FA/FIFA/whoever hope that the punishment acts as a deterrent*.

*to stop people like Niasse from running into a defender's arm/shoulder as they try to deliberately block you, I guess...

Same people calling Niasse a dirty diver are the same who will turn on him when he enters a dry spell. Just you watch.

On the basis that on average only two penalties are awarded in the PL each weekend not many

Ex pros do indeed talk about being entitled to go down but my point is that poster after poster on here have said he went down easily that suggests to me that most agree he made a meal of it or in your words exaggerated the effect and that falls full and squarely in the simulation box.
'Making a meal of it' is not simulation.

I have to admit I'm all for this rule I'm sick and tired of see players falling over after the slightest touch, 6' plus players going down because someone breathe to heavy on them and I hope it's not confined to just driving in the box but all over the pitch.

As long as there is consistency in the decision making I agree mate. Stopping this pathetic diving can only be a good thing.

Not in exclusivity it’s not I agreee but when you exaggerate the contact it very much is
Other top teams I have seen this season players dive - when no one was near them pen not given surely thats where the bans should be dished out not just a yellow card, but a red card?
Which opens the debate of video evidence there and then to help the Ref!

The amount of cry arsing in here is unreal. He dived, he got banned. Honestly if the kopites were behaving like this, thinking the whole world was against them we’d be having a laugh.

Its about consistency though ours was trial by MOTD other players have had trail by MOTD for the same thing diving without anyone near them with no ban this season stirling springs to mind!

You'd like to think that this would be a marker for the rest of the season now though. If these other incidents go unpunished from now on we can feel aggrieved but I think we'll either see a big decrease in diving or more players getting punished for it now they've handed out this ban.

I have no complaints with the ban and hope he's learned his lesson.

Listened to the guardian football podcast this morning which was recorded on Monday before Niasse was charged. They briefly discussed the penalty incident and decided it was a bit soft but they didn’t have a real problem with it.

Not a chance will there be consistency.

I think referees will end up giving a lot more yellow cards for diving to players who genuinely haven't dived. There will be some blatant penalties that aren't given due to referees wanting to show everyone how "observant" they are, added to the fact they'll be extra wary of backlash from managers and fans if they do end up being "conned" and giving a penalty for a dive, with the threat of a retrospective ban hanging over them.
