The new £ million Grandstand being built in 1970 -

Thought the old one looked magnificent for its time. Really stood out being so far back with the terracing infront. Although more modern the new stand never looked as impressive.

With these photos I'm now getting an appreciation for the ground in how it looked in the 1960s. You can see why it was chosen in '66.

When built after moving from Anfield in which our fans & players way back helped to build -
Dr Baxter made it the best stadia, only 2nd to Wembley in its heyday after the row with John Holden -
It held international games FA Cup semi-finals etc - as for Anfield - the ground we left - it was not called the pit for nothing - it only picked up when Shankly started winning things ...... Their training ground too was crude & basic at Melwood in Liverpool - Only Shankly success changed all that around to catch up with us ....

Another way at looking at GP. What was my worst moment ?

I was standing in GSE right behind the goal. It was the match against Inter Milan in the European Cup Roy Vernon rose and headed the cross in for a goal. Yes Vernon headed it. We were all jumping for joy then the ref disallowed it and gave a free kick to Inter.

It came out much, much later that this ref was corrupt and had been accepting back handers for such decisions, one of which was Vernon's goal.
