10 goals this season in a Newcastle side.

If he replicated that for us, and I see no reason why he wouldn't, he would be worth the £40,000 to £50,000 wage. He plays and scores more than Saha.

"He is past his best" - If he wasn't, we wouldn't have a chance in hell of signing him. In my opinion, he's not so far past his best that he wouldn't improve us.

Oh, and those Dubai lads looking through Premiership teams would recognise Owen and would no doubt like to show off having the Michael Owen playing card.

But I'm not even sure that we can accommodate him in the team, Danny. Plus, I could equally turn around to you and point out that £50k a week invested in a right-winger would pay better dividends than if it were invested in Owen. It's not like the Owen money mysteriously disappears if isn't spent on Owen. That money is from our very limited transfer budget, and needs to be invested wisely.

All we need to know is can Owen score goals?? The answer to that is yes. Obviously he has had fitness problems and that is were the major problem lies, but if fit he would score his fair share. I just dont feel we could afford his wage demands and unless he was prepared to take a massive pay cut a deal would be most unlikely to be struck.

Flip side is that winger would cost excess of £10million plus 50k wages that would end up 20mill over 3 years. Sell on price could recoup the price paid I agree, but if not, its another 10mill gone.

Thats the gamble with all transfers.

Of course, mate. That's where Moyes come in. We expect him to bring in someone that will hold their value. Add to that, if things work out, we've got a lid in for 8 years or whatever. Once Owen's gone (3 years, say), we either replace him, which costs money, or we don't. If we don't, then we probably didn't need him/a striker in the first place.

Anyway, let's all agree that he can do the business on his day. My argument is that he's a luxury we don't need.

It isn't pocket change, mate. A 3 year contract would see us invest around the £10m mark, give or take a few quid. Moyes is looking to build a relatively young, passionate, stable squad. Owen just doesn't fit into that set-up in my view. A couple of years ago I would have said we should go for him. But thankfully we've moved on. (y)

A straight swap for AVDM mate.

Make no mistake about it hes still the best English striker in the leauge.

Come on mate, that means nothing because all the best strikers are foreign nationals. Yakubu is leaps ahead of Owen. I'd take a fit Saha over a fit Owen. And what about Torres, Drogba, Berbatov, Anelka, Rooney et al? All better than Owen, and Rooney is English as well.

In his day, yes he was pretty fantastic, but that ship sailed after he left Liverpool.

Torres - 13
Berbatov - 9
Rooney - 12
Drogba - 4

Certainly not 30 million in the difference mate.

If Moyes decided he's worth it then you'd be behind it wouldnt you? And you'd know that Moyes wouldn't pay over the top wages if he didn't think it constituted good value for money.

Who are we to turn our nose at Michael Owen anyway? I hope we smashed all over the show in the FA Cup Final to teach you all a lesson.

I hate all these mongy ten page threads over potential transfer signings that always nearly never end up signing for us. There's a perfectly good thread on vegetables theres that attracted only a fraction of the interest.
