Its all about the right deal. The board know they cant pay 100k a week, and Owen knows he's a injury prone player, so a deal will be struck (just like Saha) if he came that favoured us rather than him.
Owen has to face facts, he asks for too much and is injury prone and he's not getting younger. The sky 4 dont want him, a host of other clubs below us would. If Owen wants to play football, he'll strike a deal and come to, IMO, the only team who could want his service who'll be playing at the highest level outside the sky 4 as they try to break into the top 4.

He wont go to a better team unless he goes to AC Milan eg for the cash.

If it doesnt happen, it doesnt happen, no loss to us.
We wont bend for Owen. He'll bend for us. He needs us more than we need him really.

His best shot at returning to a star player is to get out the prem. He doesn't have the pace anymore to compete in the league. Hell he's having trouble getting in the starting 11 on NEWCASTLE!! If he goes to Italy he'll be one of Serie A's pacier strikers, plus old strikers have trived in the league. If he goes back to Spain then he have more room to work with.

Plus there is always MLS. (y)

Owen makes, what, £100k/week at least? Over 3 years that would cost us £16m. He'd be 32, and there's no doubt in my mind that his best days would be a distant memory.

I don't know what sort of wages it would take to secure Jo, but even if he matches our top playes (say £50k/week) that would cost £7.8m in wages. If we can get him for £10m, he in 3 years we could have a player approaching him prime with a resale value of perhaps two or three times what we paid for him.

If we are to continue to close the gap to the Sky 4, we MUST outmanourve them in the transfer market, because we simply cannot compete financially. This means having to buy players on their way up. It's really that simple. If we simply buy cast off players whose best days are behind them then we'll just end up like... Newcastle.

Everton boss David Moyes is offering Michael Owen a £50,000a-week contract to make a dramatic return to Merseyside.

Moyes has been given the cash backing from chairman Bill Kenwright to sign the former England striker, who is keen to come back and play in the area following his nightmare at Newcastle United.

Talks have begun, the package has been put to Owen and the signs point to the one-time Liverpool idol saying "yes" to Everton in the very near future.

Owen was on a staggering £120,000-a-week contract on Tyneside, but those days have long gone as he has struggled for fitness and form over the past three seasons.

The one-time England centre forward knows he will have to settle for less, and Everton's deal looks the best financially - and also in several other ways.

Owen has his home nearby and his booming horse-racing interests are also based locally. But, above all, this is a football opportunity for him. Everton are in Europe and pushing to break into the Big Four.

He would also have a chance to play under Moyes and even get back into England contention with a World Cup just a year away. Moyes can go for Owen within his budget as there is no fee.

He would become one of the club's top earners but this is a special case and would not disrupt the dressing room at Everton, who are not over-blessed with experienced strikers.

Big yes from me.

Will he providing tips on the horses too??? Is so than it is a yes. Seriously though it is a gamble, but I think we need a striker, who knows if Yak will recover fully, Saha doesn't work hard enough and again is injury prone. Vaughny IMO I don't think will ever make it, another Stuart Barlow. As for Vic , well could do a job on the right hand side of midfield, but if an offer came in....I would take it.

No way. 50K/week, who are we (if we are) bidding against? Hey Robbie Fowler is also out of contract why don't we sign him too? We can start the bidding at 60K/week.

We can't win with him. Most likely he'll be injured after a few weeks, then struggle with niggling injuries for the rest of the season. Hell he isn't fully fit even now. Remember he couldn't start for NUFC, what makes you think he could start for us? And why do we need a player who drives to practice in a helicopter?

If he plays well, he'll get recalled for England, where he will defo get injured again.

The only way I would consider him is if he signs in his contract that he will retire from international footie.

He had his opportunity to play for us but he went after the money instead.

He can keep Saha company in the treatment room! Money well spent:lol:

Louis Saha, James Vaughan and Michael Owen in the same squad plus Victor Anichebe who also seems picks up alot niggling injuries.

That leaves us with Yakubu who is also out with a serious injury. It would certainly a gamble by Moyes.

It’s good to see he’s willing to take a massive wage cut, that shows a bit of ambition in my opinion. I’m not a fan by any means and I’d much rather we went for someone else but he’s still an option, one I’m sure Moyes is looking at.

ageing strikers do not a top 4 side make.

if we must poach from the barcodes go for martins.

i seem to remember owen making 'i'll never play for everton' type noises after being winded and dined into the world of mighty newcastle..?

hope this one is just rumour mill fodder.

Its all about if you think he can still play and score at the highest level, if he can he is a "next step" player, personaly i think he can.

he can nick a goal or two but i don't see him bringing the strength and verve we need to make that 'step up'.

Its all about, varience and options though for me mate and the ability to choose something different if plan a is going your way, Owen is a different style to what we already have. We have our power up front with the likes of Yak and Vaughan. Saha is pure quality, Owen on the other hand is a goal scorer, players like him are invaluable in tight games and often nick it, he can finish a chance and get the scruffy ones to. I watched him a lot coming up to the end of the season and im fairly convinced the reason he wasnt scoring was lack of service.
