I'd like to know what you guys are listening to. A few points though, if someone goes to a hospital here, they MUST be treated, no matter if they can pay for it or not. The illusion that people who can't pay don't get healthcare baffles me and I think it is some sort of European hobby to sensationalize and exaggerate about U.S. issues in your press.

Emergent healthcare yes, but that is the most expensive kind.

I work in primary care. I have a patient, an insulin dependent diabetic who lost his insurance when he was laid off. He can't afford his test strips to check his blood glucose. (I have ways to help with meds) I can't risk keeping his sugar in tight control because of the risk of him dying from hypogylcemia.

If this continues, a few years from now, he'll have an MI, be in kidney failure or have a foot amputated any of which are obscenely expensive in addition the him possibly being disabled, and therefore ironically now eligible for Medicare/Medicaid.

Sure as hell would make more sense to provide the man with some damn test strips. I wish he was the only example.

What NHS does very well is preventative care... prevent or at the very least catch disease early in the process. They also are fantastic at developing treatment guidelines based on good evidence not influenced by pharmaceutical companies or other special interests.

According to wikipedia, the US accounts for 43% of the world's military spending. We spend double what the UK does as a percentage of GDP, and quadruple that of Canada. (the same ratios exist, more or less, for every other western nation). Its hard to spend all this money being the world's policemen, and than give everyone free health care. And I am not being critical of the UK, per se, because if there is anyone else chipping in on world policing, its them.

It's always baffled me that while America are streets ahead of most of the world in terms of buildings, science, technology, economy etc. there's no free healthcare system and gay marriage is illegal in the majority of states. Which seems quite caveman to me. Not that I'm gay or anything. Whereas the UK is generally average at everything America seems like a country that's boss at some things yet absolutely sh*te at others.

Although US hospitals won't literally let someone who's been shot die because they can't afford treatment, there's loads of cases where cancer patients are in immense agony because they can't afford their medication, or go bankrupt paying for it. Yet some people oppose an NHS style free healthcare system. I don't get it.

You don't get anything for free.

National insurance? = 96 Billion, NHS = 51 Billion, rough figures, someone get more accurate ones if you want. But the NHS isn't free, NI contributions on a salary of 25k = £2145

That pays for healthcare and benefits etc.

Your countries choice to be, "The World's Policemen." A whole different can of worms that is, some police force that goes somewhere and bombs the sh1t out of it, that aint policing it is imposing yourselves and forcing what you deem to be right onto others with a different way of life, irrespective of what they may be deemed to have done.

More interested in shows of military force than eradicating homelessness and a lack of healthcare amongst your children, we have many 'non residents/ citizens' living on our shores as well...... they are entitled to healthcare and a roof over their heads, just the same as YOU would be should you visit and require medical treatment.

Policing the world is a tough argument. Pre-911 I remember reading stuff about girls getting stoned in Afghanistan (with stones) and thinking it was bad and shouldn't they not do it. But then do you intevene militarily? or do Not?

It's like that star trek rule picard used to have about intefering with a developing culture...can't remember what it was called?, prime directive? or something.

Well they have capital punishment in the U.S.

Are they interested in anyones views that oppose it ? NO, the insults about being namby pamby bleeding heart liberals start. So called people of religion that are intolerant of others, and sentence someone to death whilst resting their hand on a bible. To me a good religious person (although I'm not religious I respect others right to believe) is someone that is tolerant of all... believers and non, and would not discriminate against someone because of their Religious beliefs (or lack of) nor try to impose their doctrines and beliefs on others that do not want or need them.

There are a great many vicars & priests, Imans and Rabii that are very good friends despite having opposing views on many things.

Shiiit, even Martin McGuinness and Ian Paisley managed to put aside their views and work together... it is even said that they struck up quite a friendship and McG thinks Paisley is a good laugh ~(avoids use of 'a riot'). They set aside their differences as it was THE ONLY WAY FORWARD.

jesus, didnt realise was so bad , 100's people living in tents, still massive lack of healthcare, republican debate -'what should happen to someone who cant pay for their healthcare, let them die?' people in the audience shouting 'yeah!'
for all the faults of our benefits system at least we have a safety net

disgraceful really...

Bet most of them were "pro-lifers", too.
