Paris Olympics 2024

That view is actually incorrect Davek, Toyoko was funded less than Rio. And Rio had only £10m more in funding than Beijing which accounting for inflation according to the Bank of England inflation calculator. Means UK sport has received £100m less in the past decade.

Also you haven't taken into account certain medals are heavily based on investment such as cycling, equestrian, sailing. But the vast majority of countries have either won a medal in one or two sports or non at all. Data analysis done by university of Liverpool.

Great post mate.

I'd say though that there's certainly been no falling off a cliff in terms of funding.

The one's that get on my nerves are the rowing team. They get most lottery cash and haven't done it this games. Also, rowing is a sport that attracts huge sponsorship because of the funding of elite university teams like Cambridge and Oxford. They should be made to stand on their own two feet and the funding they get from the lottery halved and spent on kids doing boulder climbing, skateboarding, BMX - growth sports in the Games and bearing decent returns.

I have to say that lad Roberts who won the climbing gold was my favourite moment of the Games, I think. No fanfare of trumpets, he just did his best and won gold and then took it in his stride saying he might get a couple of pints to celebrate!!

Lottery cash has grown in size in that time. The athletes have been in a boom industry so that makes zero sense as an argument.

GB athletes are financially doped in comparison with other nations apart from the US where the college system has a lot of money thrown at it.
Not really . Last month my son was talking about Georgia Bell whom he’d come across in a work context and he was surprised that she wasn’t a full time athlete. The money is spread quite thinly in athletics and cycling, rowing and sailing ( ha!) get more lottery funding.

She gets Lottery funding. She said so last night. She packed her job in to go for the Olympics.

Delighted for her too.

Good showing from GB overall though. Only USA and China have more medals over all

Only the USA really count overall medals. It's always gone by golds and we have been unlucky in some events. It's our worst Olympics for 20 years.

Cycling has underperformed massively. They seemed a bit arrogant suggesting they could win every event entered. Have they only won one event?

….i wonder if they take into account how much athletes can earn competing in their sports. The top athletes have Diamond League and appearance money, I expect Keely Hodgkinson has just become a very wealthy woman.

….Finucane lacks a bit of winners attitude for me. Thought it in the Keirin and it’s confirmed in those races just now. I’m sure it was what Laura Kenny and Chris Hoy were hinting at.
Eh?!! Finucane is 21 , in her first Olympics and is coming away with three medals including a gold. Thats pretty outstanding I’d say , given the competition she’s up against just to get in the team I doubt she’d even be considered for selection if she “ lacks a bit of winners attitude” . She’s in a highly technical sport where experience and strength play a big part , both these will improve in her as she ages.
