From the little bit that I have read he seems on a par with Pickford. Might as well then just give Lossl a start.

Honestly have no idea; anybody watched him?

It's an interesting link. Roma seem to use a similar recruitment methjod to ourselves and are in a similar(ish) position to us, so it's likely he was on our radar previously. Roma made what looked a fairly sizeable investment in him, at a similar level to what we paid for Pickford, at a similar age to when we signed Pickford. Pickford was 23 when we signed him and this lad was 24. When you consider fees are a bit lower in Italy it was a very substantial investment.

It clearly hasn't worked out for him there. It doesn't mean he's a bad goalkeeper, and the option to loan him initially, with an option to buy at a somewhat reduced fee must be an enticing one.

I do agree with the general synopsis that he looks no better than Pickford, which is probably fair. You could say he looked very good for Espanyol, but I suppose contrast it with Pickford lookign very good in his first year here and at Sunderland.

There are a couple of wider points I'd make. The first is that sometimes a change is good. I'm sure if Pickford went elsewhere and had a fresh start, it may be the best thing that could happen to him. The mistakes he's made will count against him and I'm not sure will ever really be forgiven here now. Likewise with Pau, if he akes a mistake it will be mistake number 1, not mistake number 10 or 20 like we are onto with Pickford, so it gets framed differently. I'm sure the squad may think that too. It just takes the noise away a bit.

The 2nd is, that I do think something has flicked post Brighton. Pickford may get ucky that we can't do a deal before January. He looked dejected he made the mistake he did, though I am not sure that is the best frame of mind for a goalkeeper to be in. I found Ancelotti's words-normally very supportive of players instructive. The "we will talk about Pickford later" or words to that affect seemed very telling to me.

I think they have been weighing up what to do with Pickford for some time, and may have fallen down on the "give him a final chance" side. Yet 2 games in the last 3 he has now made quite sizeable mistakes. I think they are being amplified as the team is now playing better, and clear at the top of the league. I do wonder if Ancelotti has made it clear to those above him, he no longer wants to play him as he feels it will cost the team.

Just to concude, my thoughts are Ancelotti wants Donnarumma long term. We know Riaola is close to those at the top of the club, we appear to have done him a bit of a favour both signing and then allowing Moise Kean to go on loan. Donnarumma has still not signed a deal at Milan. If we are in the CL next summer, we know we have an owner who will pay big wages to move him away.

To a degree Pau Lopez may just get us through to the summer if thats the plan. It may have been hoped we stick with Pickford for a year, but suddenly a loan for a season ticks that box. If Donnarumma was an option, we would probably just use Lopez for a loan (unless he excels and surprises us).

If Lopez comes in, I suspect Pickford gets one final chance, and the next mistake he makes he's moved out. He may well push for a lona move in January, which may be extendedin summer 2021 (or hopefully for a buy if he does well for England). Thats the optimum solution here. Someone like Sheffield United take a punt on him on loan if they are still struggling.

I hope we get the deal done anyway.

I agree, but I'm not so sure we need one as desperately as people think.

As poor as Pickford has been, many other GKs concede a lot and make mistakes. We won on Saturday despite his mistake and that's what good teams do, to get a really good GK in we would have to spend a lot of money and I's rather spend it on a RB or a new RW.

Then sort the GK out next summer.

Come back to me on this when he cost us the title on the last day of the season.

If not, then lossl needs to get a go between the sticks.

No, good teams have goalkeepers that don’t make mistakes every single game.

Ah so because his forwards have been able to bail him out so far it’s ok that he makes mistakes every game. Crazy logic
