Fonesca - why the excitement around this?

What has the guy achieved / what qualities does he have that make people think he'd even be on a level with any of Moyes, Martinez, Koeman or Allardyce? Let alone a genuine step up in management quality like an Ancelotti, Hiddink, Benitez etc - those who've been there and done it in the big leagues. The biggest clubs this guy has managed have been in Portugal and Ukraine - no comparison to the prem?

Teams managed:

2005–2007 Estrela Amadora (youth)
2007–2008 1º Dezembro
2008–2009 Odivelas
2009–2011 Pinhalnovense
2011–2012 Aves
2012–2013 Paços Ferreira
2013–2014 Porto
2014–2015 Paços Ferreira
2015–2016 Braga
2016– Shakhtar Donetsk

Honours:

Manager
Porto
Braga
Shakhtar Donetsk

Explain the qualities to me? Looks like we'd be gambling on raw potential - which was the case with Martinez

I'd assume we'd still have the same strategy as 1-2 years ago which was to crack the top 6, bringing in a manager who's a proven winner

Fonseca from what I can see doesn't fit that brief but you may be able to shed some light on this?

Seems to me people just think he looks good and those untarnished by any experience in the difficult premier league are often viewed with rose tinted glasses...Then after a few defeats, the fickle masses will turn on them!

But this isn't a reason for going for someone with a mediocre / non existent record. Thought we'd be going for someone who'd won / seriously challenged for league titles consistently in the serious leagues?

Name one manager who was won league title consistently in the 'serious leagues' that would even consider taking charge here?

Fonseca has a philosophy, one that is current and progressive. Demonstrated how adaptable and flamboyant his teams can be in the Champions League this season beating Man City along the way. To reach the knockout rounds with a Ukranian side - whom can't play in their home stadium - is fantastic. He won the treble for Shakhtar, which may not look as shiny due to the level of competition in Ukraine but it's still some achievement.
