Fonesca - why the excitement around this?

What has the guy achieved / what qualities does he have that make people think he'd even be on a level with any of Moyes, Martinez, Koeman or Allardyce? Let alone a genuine step up in management quality like an Ancelotti, Hiddink, Benitez etc - those who've been there and done it in the big leagues. The biggest clubs this guy has managed have been in Portugal and Ukraine - no comparison to the prem?

Teams managed:

2005–2007 Estrela Amadora (youth)
2007–2008 1º Dezembro
2008–2009 Odivelas
2009–2011 Pinhalnovense
2011–2012 Aves
2012–2013 Paços Ferreira
2013–2014 Porto
2014–2015 Paços Ferreira
2015–2016 Braga
2016– Shakhtar Donetsk

Honours:

Manager
Porto
Braga
Shakhtar Donetsk
Individual

..there’s one key bit of analysis for me, and it’s who has he bought and sold. We need somebody with a proven eye for a player, somebody who has built a team or brought in exactly the change required to improve the playing side. I appreciate some of these responsibilities fall to the DoF, but we need a Manager who knows the type of players he wants.

Ditto - it would be really helpful if you could explain what's so great about Fonseca? What does he have that will take us forward?

His sides play good football. He's beaten Roma and Manchester City in the Champions league, impressively too if you watched those games. Built a Braga side up too.

He broke the Kyiv 'reign' on the Ukrainian league - winning Shakhtar's first league in three years. Also won a treble which is impressive when you're kicked out of your home ground and city due to a war.

Potential? Maybe but he's a better choice than what's out there and a million times better than what we already have.

Anyone who debates him being better than Allardyce - is an idiot.

Name one manager who was won league title consistently in the 'serious leagues' that would even consider taking charge here?

Fonseca has a philosophy, one that is current and progressive. Demonstrated how adaptable and flamboyant his teams can be in the Champions League this season beating Man City along the way. To reach the knockout rounds with a Ukranian side - whom can't play in their home stadium - is fantastic. He won the treble for Shakhtar, which may not look as shiny due to the level of competition in Ukraine but it's still some achievement.
Thanks - that's good insight and helps explain the interest - still a risk though. He could be the next Mourinho - he could be the next Villas Boas??

We were gunning for big name managers at the time of the Koeman appointment and assumed we'd be staying consistent with that strategy. I'd have thought we'd be angling for the likes of Ancelotti, Hiddink, Simeone, Benitez etc....
