This is the correct decision he has been a loyal servant but he will not improve the team if he plays. I think his experience could be good for a team chasing promotion but his days in the top flight are surely over.

His twitter comments were pure class. Just like the man himself. You just know that his message and the sentiment behind it are 100% genuine.

A great servant of the club. At his peak he was one of the best centre backs in the league and could very easily have left to go to one of the bigger clubs. he remained loyal though. He deserved a testimonial and I don't know why he hasn't had one.

Having said that, the club has made the right decision here. I wish him well in whatever he does next.

Agree but we can't have it both ways. The club is criticized for not being ruthless enough.

I wouldn't have cut anyone loose until we knew whether we got the last Europa spot. We didn't get eliminated until week 37. We have to clear out a ton of dead wood but if we were looking at a couple of July ties with clubs in Kazakhstan or the like then we'd need all the useful depth we could get. Even if we got Holgate back into the first team that's only four CBs (assuming we keep Zouma, which we probably can't) and that's not enough for four competitions. New signings might not be match fit, or bed in quickly enough for that Thursday night fixture in Široki Brijeg or wherever.

So once the last home game was past, I don't begrudge the club taking the time to work through their options. He's got plenty of time to find a new club. He can always be honored later.
Hopefully it was just in case we got into the Europa League, but it does also feel like we don't make a big deal of the exits like this. Didn't we have this issue with someone else a few years ago? Anyway, I know he's not won anything but 12 years at one club is huge nowadays, in the modern era, so we should reward and celebrate Jags and Baines just for that reason. Howard, Cahill could have got this too, while also that would have engaged US and AUS supporters. Oh well. Hope they do the right thing. Still no official announcement from the club.

Given that Jags has only just found out he is surplus, does this mean we have just sorted a replacement?
If so, who?

Howard had a big farewell.

The writing was on the wall for Howard. He had time left on his deal but his form was terrible (lost his starting spot) and he was a bit pouty. So he left voluntarily, which let everyone do a make-nice farewell as a way of papering over the fact that it was ending poorly.

Ironically, by having better form than Howard at the end (not hard) and acting like a consummate professional, Jags cost himself a shot at a big goodbye since it was conceivable that he might be back.
