Look at the woman in between Jags and that ugly munter Henderson. If you zoom in it looks like she's got the biggest single buck tooth ever.

Dave having a bit of a mare here.
He's not though, is he.

Jags had an awful first half of the season, along with practically every other player in the squad. His recovery in form coincided with Stones coming back into the side, but he was still at fault individually for several goals - Benteke against Villa being the most recent. He got the player of the year vote due to an emotional response to his admittedly excellent goal against the RS.

There are many lessons to be learned from this season, and the one I'd point to as relevant to Jagielka is the fact that he's reached an age now where he

a) isn't going to get any better; and
b) is going to get worse as he loses what little pace he has.

He may not be on the decline yet. He may not show outward signs of dropping his level of performance yet. But it's coming. And when it arrives he is going to drop off the cliff, metaphorically speaking. We saw it with Distin this year, and Jags is not the physical freak that Distin is - there is no chance of Jags performing at prem standards when he's 34 / 35 / 36 / 37.

Bring in Alderweireld or similar to partner Stones for the next 5 years. Start forging a new CB partnership whilst Jags is still around and playing at enough of a level to be reliable in a three-man rotation. You could even extend Jags' career, and delay his decline a bit, by reducing the number of game she has to play in a season.

And if I hear one more person say "but he's an England international"...... so's Phil Jones FFS. Newsflash: England aren't that good.

Don't try and convince people he got player of the season for a goal. And he's quick, maybe not as quick as he used to be, but he still has pace.

If you don't like him and want him replacing, that's fine. But don't chat bobbins to try and back yourself up.

He sure as hell didn't get it for his defending, mate. Very few players came out of this season with any credit. It's understandable, in the wake of a pretty diabolical season, that there would be a degree of emotion in the voting. He didn't get it SOLELY for the goal, but the goal elevated him above others who had played to a similar mediocre standard.

Out of the two of them, Stones is the better defender. Please don't bring up Jags' amazing passing accuracy percentage this year as a counter-argument unless you can put into context by telling me what percentage of those succesful passes were sideways to another defender or back to Howard / Robles.

And he's quick, maybe not as quick as he used to be, but he still has pace.
Read the post properly pal. I said he's reached an age (32... 33 in August) at which he has to face the possibility of losing his pace. When that goes, he's toast. The question of whether he has pace NOW wasn't one that I asked. He has got some pace, yes.

I have nothing against him. It would be hard to like or dislike someone I've never met (bar Chico). I'm talking about the rate at which he is likely to decline as a player, and how imminently that decline may begin. His age dictates that we need to look for his replacement now, so that we don't need to panic-buy, or rush in an unprepared Browning or Galloway, should his pace drop off over the next six to twelve months. You know, like Barry's has.

That's not bobbins mate. It's caution.

Yes he did mate. Clearly.

Hopefully Phillipa will have a good season next year, but you are right we should be looking to the future because he has maybe one or two decent seasons left as starting CB.

Despite Stones being the better of the two of them?

OK mate :bye:
What are you basing that on?

Seriously it's a joy of mine to watch loons on here get over excited over a young or foreign player and wanting our most important players droppe for them right away.

Stones has done well and should turn into a brilliant defender, no doubt about it, but anyone more than four years freshly into owning pubes can see that Jagielka has been the most important player in our defence this season.

Well, even like the other Everton players see it and voted for him for their player of the season.

You know better though right? Right?

LOL.

Jags was unable to positively influence anyone around him in the first half of the season, when we were getting ragged around like Ramsay Bolton's newest wife. Stones comes back from injury however and voila! All of a sudden, we start looking a little better at the back - even Jags started playing better. Then comes the game away at Kiev, where Stones is unavailable.... and WHACK, we get slapped around once again.

Stones was more important than Jags this year and it's not MASSIVELY surprising, given that Jags is nearly 33 and could conceivably be looking at his last two seasons of top-flight football starting now.

We should be looking at bringing in someone now, who is older than Stones but younger than Jags, because players will ALWAYS age. Argue all you like about the player of the season award, but you can't argue with aging. Not that it will stop you trying to argue, of course.
