Jags was unable to positively influence anyone around him in the first half of the season, when we were getting ragged around like Ramsay Bolton's newest wife. Stones comes back from injury however and voila! All of a sudden, we start looking a little better at the back - even Jags started playing better. Then comes the game away at Kiev, where Stones is unavailable.... and WHACK, we get slapped around once again.
Stones was more important than Jags this year and it's not MASSIVELY surprising, given that Jags is nearly 33 and could conceivably be looking at his last two seasons of top-flight football starting now.
We should be looking at bringing in someone now, who is older than Stones but younger than Jags, because players will ALWAYS age. Argue all you like about the player of the season award, but you can't argue with aging. Not that it will stop you trying to argue, of course.
