....just catching up with stuff, delighted he's signed an extension to his contract and presume enhanced terms. He's not only a very good defender but also a top professional and major influence at FF.

Scary to think he's kept his pace at a decent level after that cruciate injury. He was rapid before that though, maybe the injury forced him to work more on his positioning though because I think it's definitely improved. You don't see him making the last lunging tackles that Distin makes, his positioning has got better.

That's just experience.

He had that injury when he was 25, defenders judgement and positioning just get better with age. The fact he's still got all that pace shows what a great athlete he is as well as a great footballer.

If we fume at players for wanting out of Everton, we also need to appreciate quality players that are proud to be here and stick around, producing consistently great performances in a professional manner.

I'm glad to say I was there when he slotted the pen away at Wembley and will always remember that equaliser at Anfield. Mostly for the replays of the kopites' looks of horror in the background as it crashed in off the bar.

He's never quite got back all the pace he had though. Maybe that's age too but I rember him being absolutely rapid pre injury. He's still got good pace for a centreback though and is one of the few players to come back from an injury like that at the same level. Arteta Yakubu and Gibson have never been the same since injury.

Possibly moyes's best signing..

Tim Cahill disagrees with you

so does Arteta

And Pienaar

What is the point in giving a 33 year old another year on his contract? He already had two years left to run and I highly doubt there would be much competition for his signature.

He is a good player, don't get me wrong but this just makes no sense. If in two seasons time he is still at the level he is now, then by all means give him an extension then.

An injury or simply time catching up with you after 30 can happen within a season, as we have seen with Barry and Disitin already.

Martinez saying Jags is a born leader, like most Evertonians I am pleased he plays for us,and he is a solid defender, but born leader he ain't.

He isn't a shouty leader in the mould of Gerrard or Terry.

But he also doesn't get sent off in derbies, beat up djs, racially abuse opponents, or have an affair with a mate's wife.

Depends on what you judge as leadership qualities really.

His teammates, the ones who really know, have always been highly complimentary about his leadership.
