What is the point in giving a 33 year old another year on his contract? He already had two years left to run and I highly doubt there would be much competition for his signature.

He is a good player, don't get me wrong but this just makes no sense. If in two seasons time he is still at the level he is now, then by all means give him an extension then.

An injury or simply time catching up with you after 30 can happen within a season, as we have seen with Barry and Disitin already.

I am in accord with you on this. The existing contract would take him to 35 now he will be here to when he is 36. There is a great deal of chat about getting a CB in. I have to ask what CB would come here in the knowledge that it will be very unlikely there will be any game time for him.

If any CB we get in, is worried that they cant take the place of a 33 year old CB, then I suggest they are at the wrong club.

He isn't a shouty leader in the mould of Gerrard or Terry.

But he also doesn't get sent off in derbies, beat up djs, racially abuse opponents, or have an affair with a mate's wife.
Depends on what you judge as leadership qualities as really.
Well mate,I stil shake my head over the Costa / Howard incident, I will always believe he ain't a Leader on the pitch.

Well look at this way, in the midfield we have a 33 year old Barry who has never been dropped. Not counting the very young we have two CBs, do you think either are likely to be dropped at any time? So who would want to come in those circs.

And yet we still managed to sign 2 CMs in the last 12months, funny that isnt it.

No it is not, think it darned silly when none have left but bear in mind basically a team needs 4 CM but only 2 CBs.

Lad your actually fewin with 2 and a half months of the window left, if we dont sign AT LEAST 1 CB in this window, I will join you in fume central, but yano, bit early to get the fume pants on? Surely?

You mistake me MG, not fuming at all. Just agreeing with the poster about Jags extension and commenting cannot understand why bearing in mind RM's philosophy of building a young team.

Martinez saying Jags is a born leader, like most Evertonians I am pleased he plays for us,and he is a solid defender, but born leader he ain't.

Theres more than one way to lead. I bet you and others think shouting and getting in peoples faces is the only way to define a 'Leader' when its quite clearly not.

'Philosophy of building a young team'

If you want to build a successful young team, you need players like Phil Jagielka to stick around as long as possible.
You're crazy if you dont think that having him around will benefit Stones, Galloway and Browning.

Oh, ok, in that case, I personally thought giving Barry 3 years was a good idea, it certainly didnt look like it at times last season, but he came "good" in the end, I really dont expect him to see it out, think this will possibly be his last season myself, but I do have some concerns.

Jags didnt show his age last season, so no major concerns, I suppose we see in a year or 2, but you need players like Jags and Barry, good pros to have around, im sure, when their performances drop, they will be dropped, it happened with Neville and also recently Distin, although with Distin it wasnt just performance based, if the rumours are to be believed.

We focus to much on players ages and wages these days, im guilty as much as anybody, but we should see it for what it is, some good news for the club and just focus on the here and now, the next important season is next season, that should be our only concern.

There is that Matt, but Stones will be a regular and with Jags staying in there, my point was how can we expect to bring in another good youngish CB that folk are calling for who perhaps could see not much game time to be had here.

I dont think he will bring in a young CB, I think hes gonna go for a cheapish late 20s early 30s and see how much Galloway and Browning improve in the next few years.

No I don't think that at all, I do think a captains job s more than leading the team out and going to the centre circle for the toss up,on several occasions I have seen Jags staying away from confrontations, and I like Jags, but he ain't a leader, that's my opinion mate,so I will leave it there x
