If Jagielka was to step down , I would prefer Holgate to be given the chance to prove himself. I like Mori but Holgate is by far the best prospect we have had since Rooney. All academic though as I think Jagielka has the ability and experience to hold on to his place for this season.

See , I'm not offended.:) Of the names you mentioned above Barkley is arguable , I'm personally disappointed by him at present but at the beginning I did think he would develop into a better player than he has at present. When Holgate played alongside Stones he looked far more assured and lacked Stone's eccentricities, far better than him. Rodwell always looked like what he was, a converted CB never particularly rated him and wasn't sorry to see him go. Galloway is a very good player but I would rate Holgate far ahead of him. I would like to see Holgate and Galloway as our CB pairing in the near future, who knows ?
 

The penalties he has given away have been criminal, well unprofessional.

If an attacker gets goal-side of you in the box you do ... nothing and try to get back into position asap.

I actually wonder sometimes if the Grobbelar Betting Syndicate is'nt still operating.

I think it's just time catching up with Jags and he's always been piss poor when not playing with confidence. don't think he's the type to be looking for a Brucie bonus every now and then ( though the 2 pens against City were embarrassing! )

My comment in particular was more of a statement that he has just never been the elite defender some have made him out to be.

Loyal servant? Yes.
Always gives his all? Yes.
Decent, likeable guy? Yes.
1 of the best centre halves we've had in the premier league? He wouldn't be in my top 5, might sneak into top 10.

I said it before, and I'll say it again, he has been a long serving, loyal and committed, average player, who had a particular defensive style that can catch the eye when it works out, but can cost you goals when it doesn't. He was bought as a utility player to cover RB/defensive CM and in time became part of a decent defensive unit in a team set up to be hard to break down.

The shouts of interest from Arsenal, I've heard the rumours but there's never been any concrete interest from what I can gather.

Injuries have played a part, and I agree that he was never really the same after the initial injury in 08/09. But now he has now lost some of the pace that made him effective, and unlike other players who have continued to contribute past his age, he's never been the greatest in the air, his positioning is questionable, and he was never a cultured ball playing centre half, so his contribution is marginalised.

He is definitely worth keeping on around the squad, and I'm sure he's a great guy to have in the dressing room, but I just don't think he should be 1st choice any more, and he certainly shouldn't be captain.

Williams and Funes Mori are the starting pair for me.

It happened with Distin - his legs just went almost overnight. It wasn't a gradual process.

The issue with Distin is that he was a guaranteed starter for far too long after the problem started.

That shouldn't be the case with Jagielka and regardless you don't just let your captain go half-way through the season, even if he should primarily be back up.

Could (and perhaps should) be his last season with us. But I highly doubt he'll be off anywhere until next summer at the earliest, though i do get the feeling we'll be back in for a CB come January.

Distin was always the better player of the two. Faster, fitter, better in the air. If you think Distin should have been taken out of the staring 11 sooner than he was, then I'm mystified as to why you think Jags should be given more time.
 

Am gonna agree with holgate being our brightest prospect currently ... and i can't remember much errors apart from his first game ( spurs ? ) where he was caught ball watching for a goal

He's quick and tall , still needs to fill out naturally but he needs to start getting games now IMO

Distin also had a tendency to do something crazy when he had the ball. He was a good player for us up until that last season, but he always had the potential to make a mistake, rather like Funes Mori.

Really? Outrageous this. He might be crap but can't see there is anyway on Earth he is bent and to even suggest it is disgraceful.

I didn't say Jags should have more time in the starting XI. I'm saying he should primarily be back up...
