Phil Jagielka

And Joel.

I'm far from Stek's biggest fan Khal, and at this stage would happily see Joel come back in.

But, I must say, Stek made two very good saves the other day - one from Sig's free-kick and another from Sig again right at the end. It was from that save we went up to the other end and scored.

He didn't do anything wrong on Saturday (maybe because he rarely had anything to do, mind!).

Love Jags, been defending him for ages but I don't think I can anymore unfortunately. He's rapidly deteriorating, it's like Distin all over again. Time to bring in Funes, Holgate, Galloway or Browning till we can get a replacement in.

I dont agree, theres a small chance hes done, but hes not making mistake after mistake, hes just making lots of them in a small period of time, lets see what the score is in a month.

Think he is done myself, the only doubt is that Jags has had these wierd periods of form before and pulled through them, (when he first came into the squad under Moyes, first time he returned after doing his knee, and post world cup 2 seasons ago at the start of the season), difference over all thos etimes for me is that all those others terrbile run of form he had - came with a reason that in part explained the dip, with this it came out of nowhere and does look like he has just hit the wall - Distin and Cahill style.

What it does show is the peril of having a 34 year old who you rely on so much without any suitable competition that the manager trusts (Holgate too young, Mori he just doesn't seem to rate - and don't blame him on that score), same could be said with Barry as well (at his age shouldnt be starting every game and should really be started to be getting phased out in importance) - the best teams do try to manage the decline due to age and plan ahead for the replacement, as a club it's something we just don't do very well at all, hence having usually a season or so of a player starting who has clearly gone past it (Neville, Cahill, Distin and numerous other examples)

Everton defender Phil Jagielka needs to improve, warns Ronald Koeman ahead of return to Southampton
  • Everton travel to Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday
  • Phil Jagielka has been in three recent penalties against the Toffees
  • Ronald Koeman has warned the England centre-back that he must improve

Everton captain Phil Jagielka is fighting for his place under Ronald Koeman following a dodgy run of form that saw him concede a penalty and get substituted during last weekend's draw against Swansea City.

Koeman has offered his support for the 34-year-old defender who was named in Gareth Southgate's last England squad but acknowledged his performances need to get better for his partnership with Ashley Williams to continue.

'He is experienced enough to deal with critics. But he needs to know that, he’s a national team player and he needs to improve and be an important player with Ashley as the two centre-backs,' said Koeman.

Jagielka has been involved in three penalties against Everton, including this foul on Swansea's Gylfi Sigurdsson

We have competition so he needs to give his standard, his level of performance like everybody in the team. Of course he was involved in three penalties, two against Manchester City and then one last weekend.

'I give him the support I give everybody. I think players need confidence.'

Koeman, who returns to former club Southampton on Sunday, won't confirm if Jagielka starts ahead of Argentine Ramiro Funes Mori. But he offered some comfort by also holding Idrissa Gueye responsible for Swansea's opening goal and saying he withdrew Jagielka later for tactical reasons to force an equaliser.

Even so, Everton go to the south coast having won just once in eight matches including a 5-0 hammering at Chelsea.

Koeman would not confirm if Jagielka would partner Ashley Williams (left) against Saints

Koeman can expect a hostile reception from Saints fans after leaving them for Merseyside last summer. But the former Barcelona and Holland legend insists: 'Why should I sleep badly worrying about what will happen? I am concentrated on my job and if they whistle, they whistle. I can't change that. It is no problem for me.

'I have always had high expectations in my career as a player and now a manager. You can see the difference (in expectations) between Everton and Southampton and that's the reason I finally made my decision to move.'

Koeman said he understood Everton fans booing their first performance against Swansea when they trailed 1-0. 'I wasn't happy either,' he added.

To be fair I'm sure Martinez had Mori and Besic in mind to phase in as Jags and Gaz Baz replacements, and being frank I think they were pretty good choices all things considered. Unfortunately RK doesn't seem to rate RFM and Mo picked up a nasty injury.
Not sure why you think Holgate is too young. Stones was young but was given the chance, no reason Mason can't.

Just don't personally see Koeman starting in a back 2 a 19yo centre back who has only played a handful of games at this level mate, so far he's played him as cover at rb when Seamus was out, and in a back 3 opening day at spurs (if i remember that right)

Fact we seemed to be trying hard to not only bring in Williams but also another (Koulibaly or Kone) seems to reinforce that idea, Stones was indeed played - although initially more at rb than cb until he got a bit of experience, but that was under a manager who seemed pretty unbothered about players making mistakes (both a good thing and a very bad one for development) - Koeman seems cut from a different cloth and don't see him as someone willing to allow a player to go through that learning curve - especially if it costs goals - which ultimately any really young cb will do initially.

Even before the Besic injury and Jags went off a cliff - Koeman seemed to be trying desperately some may say (sissoko bid for example or the embarrasing Witsel saga) to bring in another cb and another centre midfielder - Jags decline and Besic injury would just seem to have increased the need he had already identified you'd have to think.

Totally dismissed Mori and Holgate there.

Not being pedantic, Holgate turned 20 in October...time to be thrown in.

If Jagielka was to step down , I would prefer Holgate to be given the chance to prove himself. I like Mori but Holgate is by far the best prospect we have had since Rooney. All academic though as I think Jagielka has the ability and experience to hold on to his place for this season.
