Phil Jagielka

I don't normally get outraged about footy because it is only meant to be a laugh but some absolutely shocking posts in here about Jagielka. Been a very good player for us for years, superb at times. Was one of the best centre backs in the league around the time of his injury in 08/09. There's a reason Arsenal have come knocking for him more than once, and a reason he never agitated for a move when they did (read: he's a sound head who's done nothing but serve the club well over a full ten years).

Time does seem to have caught up with him this year but christ, the way he's being spoken about in here we can have absolutely no complaints when players show us a lack of loyalty.

Jags has been a good servant and doesnt deserve some of the abuse he has been getting on here. Its not his fault his legs have gone and he doesnt have the confidence to trust in the bit of pace he still has. Thought Koeman had managed him well by taking him out against West Ham but he has fed him to the Wolves a bit by playing him in a back three vs Chelsea when none of the centre halfs have any pace and Gana was injured and then playing him again after he played midweek for England. He hasnt got the legs for two games in a week anymore. Should not be starting for us at the moment and in my opinion we should be playing Holgate and Williams as although Mori is dangerous from set pieces he looks like a car crash waiting to happen defensively. Need a new CH in Jan and allow Jags to continue playing somewhere else regularly rather than let the very good seasons of the past be scrubbed from peoples memories.

there's no need to slag him off. He's never done anything to deserve that, saying he's not good enough to be a starter is fair enough based on this season imo, i think he still has a bit-part role to play for us, he may enjoy more freedom of being rid of the captaincy too, but mori should come back in. We finally got a clean sheet when he came in and then that followed 5 goals against when jags returned and then him conceding another penalty.

I don't think it's necessarily people (including me) slagging him off and forgetting what he has been...
My comment in particular was more of a statement that he has just never been the elite defender some have made him out to be.

Loyal servant? Yes.
Always gives his all? Yes.
Decent, likeable guy? Yes.
1 of the best centre halves we've had in the premier league? He wouldn't be in my top 5, might sneak into top 10.

I said it before, and I'll say it again, he has been a long serving, loyal and committed, average player, who had a particular defensive style that can catch the eye when it works out, but can cost you goals when it doesn't. He was bought as a utility player to cover RB/defensive CM and in time became part of a decent defensive unit in a team set up to be hard to break down.

The shouts of interest from Arsenal, I've heard the rumours but there's never been any concrete interest from what I can gather.

Injuries have played a part, and I agree that he was never really the same after the initial injury in 08/09. But now he has now lost some of the pace that made him effective, and unlike other players who have continued to contribute past his age, he's never been the greatest in the air, his positioning is questionable, and he was never a cultured ball playing centre half, so his contribution is marginalised.

He is definitely worth keeping on around the squad, and I'm sure he's a great guy to have in the dressing room, but I just don't think he should be 1st choice any more, and he certainly shouldn't be captain.

Great player, one of my favourites. And it pains me to say it, but he is finished and he needs to be replaced and let go. No place for sentiment in football and we've been far too loyal to has beens in the past. Hopefully Ronald deals with the situation sensibly.

He looked just fine at the beginning of the season like.

But since the City game his head just looks to have gone and his confidence shot.

It happened with Distin - his legs just went almost overnight. It wasn't a gradual process.

The issue with Distin is that he was a guaranteed starter for far too long after the problem started.

That shouldn't be the case with Jagielka and regardless you don't just let your captain go half-way through the season, even if he should primarily be back up.

Could (and perhaps should) be his last season with us. But I highly doubt he'll be off anywhere until next summer at the earliest, though i do get the feeling we'll be back in for a CB come January.

You're right mate, no need to lambast him. I remember the great Brian Labone pulling a few shirts near the end.
