Phil Jagielka

I've never been a big Jagielka fan, but I respect him as he was a good player with a great attitude but let's face it, he is nowhere near legendary status..

Therefor thanks jags, but your done, goodbye

People making out this is a new thing. He has always been a bit of a liability. He has made a career out of being fast and brave, and his defensive style relies heavily on making last gasp lunges to either get a challenge in or block a shot, which has caused countless conceded penalties and deflected goals past a stranded GK.

His ability on the ball has always been questionable and the sight of him getting to half way line and either going back to Howard or trying to emulate Heitingas passing range as he launched yet another aimless diagonal ball out for a goal kick used to infuriate me no end. Heitinga was our player of the year, start next season, Moyes had his favourite right back in there.

I also believe it was Jagielka who was at fault for the beginning of the 2014/15 season, which Distin was blamed for and hung out dry, something Martinez loyalty should take some of the blame for, but when it came back the other way, our captain did nothing of the sort in return and instead seemed to lead the revolt.

He is also something of a shithouse as captains go, and seems to back away from any sort of leadership duty, the Mirallas penalty incident a prime case in point. Say what you want about Phil Nevilles ability, and I certainly have over the years, but he was 10x the captain Jagielka ever was.

Jagielka is an average player who has admittedly had some good games and great moments (anfield goal), but has been lauded by some as something he has never been, and has been lucky to always have good defensive partners to play alongside.

Lescott, Heitinga, Neville, Distin, Alcaraz, Stones, Howard, even Martinez have all been blamed at different times over the years for our defensive fragility, but only 1 person has remained a constant through all of it, and that is Jagielka.

Like I say, to insist this a new thing baffles me.

Lovely fella though.

Not going to join in the slagging of his career here - he has been a cracking player for us over the years. Has gone through bad spells like many players, but has on balance probably been the best centre back we've had at the club in the Premier League era. In 2009 or so he was absolutely superb and it broke my heart a bit that he missed out on the cup final that year when he did his knee against City.

In July he will have been here for 10 years, which is an achievement not to be sniffed at for a player who didn't come through our youth system. I don't want him sold before that as I think he deserves a bit of recognition, but ultimately I'm beginning to think that this latest run of form is more of a decline than a temporary blip.

He's never been much of a leader as a character but we now have Williams who can fill that role - think we need to buy another centre back in January or the summer as I also don't have a huge amount of faith that Funes Mori is the one who can step up and become the presence next to Williams that we need - think our pursuit of Kone before the deadline was quite telling on this too.

Great player, and no - he shouldn't be sold or dropper permanently. However Funes Mori was really good for us last season, and deserves a chance over Jagielka.

He actually did come through our youth setup frandel, except we presciently gave him the boot.

He's tosh. Get rid.

Age catches up with defenders at different times. I remember Watson, Weir, Stubbs and even Distin who were all fine defenders go that 1 season extra where they fell off the hill. At centre half losing that yard of pace and sharpness makes such a difference, as it messes up with how you position yourself and then the sort of tackles you have to make. You would always have taken certain positions then suddenly you can't get to the ball doing that. It's like if a cricket batsman has a flaw found out, they will have to re-jig their entire technique and many can never recover from that.

Jagielka now has the look of a player who has fallen by the wayside. He was wrongly scapegoated for the England world cup in 2014 but it has been downhill since then. I will contradict myself here a bit, but I think he needs to be kept on, but as a squad player. You couldn't let the experience he has walk out of the door, but that position like many others needs to be revisited in January.

thats the problem with our squad, too much experience, mostly of failure apart from barry.

He unfortunately benefits massively from the local-lad (Osman/Hibbert) / been-at-the-club-ages (Cahill) syndrome, whereby fans find it difficult to accept he's just not good enough any more. Imagine if he was a foreigner ... the fans would be up in arms with him continuing to steal a starting spot and giving away penalty after penalty as he's simply too slow and clumsy nowadays.

...I think he's from Manchester.
