Phil Jagielka

led by example yesterday, great defending ,also loved the run he made from his own area right into their penalty area, sets the tone others follow.

Im a big fan of Jagielka and stones couldn't wish for a better mentor.as captain he could easily pull rank and choose to play on the right side but he unselfishly plays on the left for the good of the team.Hopefully we'll see him lift a trophy in the next couple of years because he fully deserves to

A big cash signing like Funes Mori - and being a left sided CB - is going to place pressure on Jagielka to focus 100% of the time. I think that's what we're seeing and will continue to see. If he stumbles - as he usually does in a season for an extended period - he'll be out of the team. It's good competition now for places, exactly what we needed.

Jagielka has been outstanding this season along with Stones. It's a shame that he won't get the credit he deserves though by the "Big/SKY 4" obsessed media and Hodgson.

I suppose he could be learning from John Terry this season though who's been tremendous in every game and is a real role model for young players like Stones with the impeccable behaviour shown throughout his career.

He's an absolute boss in this form, will be tough for Funes to break into the team at this rate save for cup games. That said hopefully the extra competition will push them on even more

It should be Cahill taking the fall for the World Cup, but sadly I think Jagielka's time as first choice is up.

Cahill has never been a particularly good defender. He's just a decent enough footballer to be a foil for a stopper.

Great player that was badly decimated for a small time by the appalling form of Distin next to him and Timmmy behind him. Most centre halves would have retired in protest about being made to play with them but jags stuck it out.

Depends what you want from a captain. Incredibly well respected, well liked within the side and leads by example on the pitch.

This. Think too many people associate a captain with someone who goes on the pitch and starts screaming at the ref and opposition players. Jags is the perfect role model for our younger players, same with people like Barry, Osman, Naismith, Baines. Good professionals who can help the younger ones into being better players.

Some want to see him screaming at our own players on the pitch as well when they are not performing.

Jags does that sort of rebuke more often with a look of disdain, surprise and sorrow which personally I'd find far more effective as a kick up the arse than a public tirade.
